Penich scores an ace

Charles Penich didn’t let his age stand in the way of scoring one of golf’s rare shots. The 81-year old man from New Derry scored an ace on No. 6, a 180-yard par-3, at Pleasant Valley Country Club on May 5 with a 7-wood. Vincent DeCario, Bill Digirolamo and Emil Boures witnessed the shot.

Softball

Four Vulcans all-PSAC

A trio of seniors was among the four California University of Pa. softball players recently named to the 2006 PSAC West all-star team. Seniors Jen Doty, Becky Mezyk and Debbie Tedesco were named to the first team while junior Megan Timpf was honored on the second team.

Mezyk earned two berths for the fourth-straight year for a total of eight all-PSAC selections. She was a first-team utility player and a second-team pitcher, the fourth year she has been so honored. Doty was the first-team second baseman. She was first-team at the position in 2004 while being the 2005 PSAC West Athlete of the Year in 2005 as a catcher.

Tedesco was the top designated hitter in the conference to gain her third all-conference selection. She was a two-time honoree in the outfield and was the 2003 PSAC West Rookie of the Year.

Timpf was the second-team selection at shortstop, her first time as an all-conference player.

Baseball

Conte, Hedrick honored

The California University of Pa. baseball team garnered the top two conference honors recently when sophomore third baseman and pitcher Robert Hedrick was named the PSAC West Athlete of the Year and Mike Conte was honored as the PSAC West Coach of the Year.

Hedrick earned all-conference honors at third base for the second consecutive season. Drew Aniceti, a sophomore second baseman, Lee Rohan, a junior leftfielder, and junior utility player Jon Leber joined Hedrick as first-team selections.

Dustin Woodring, a junior shortstop, Dave Sibenac, a sophomore catcher, Ryan Yost, a sophomore outfielder, and junior pitcher Chris Doerschner were second-team selections.

Conte was honored as the conference’s top coach for the fourth time in his 10 seasons at California.
