Champion runner
Carmichaels native Don Waggett has been victorious in his age group in two half marathons (13.1 miles) over the past six months. Waggett accomplished his feats in the 55-59 age bracket in the Silver Strand on Nov. 15, 2005 with a time of 1:27:18, and the Carlsbad on Jan. 16, 2006 with a time of 1:29:32. It was his second straight age-group win in both races. The Silver Strand had 2,765 participants and is run from Colorado to Imperial Beach pier in San Diego. The Carlsbad had 7,467 participants and is run approximately 30 miles north of San Diego. Waggett is a 1967 graduate of Carmichaels and a 1971 graduate of California University of Pa. He retired from the United States Marine Corps in 1991 and is currently teaching mathematics at Oceanside High School in Oceanside, Calif. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. D.L. Waggett of Carmichaels.
