West Greene earns first ever softball playoff victory
It was a big day for Rebecca Burns and the West Greene Lady Pioneers. Burns was 3-for-4 at the plate, including a two-RBI single to put West Greene ahead for good in the fifth inning of a 4-2 win over Our Lady of the Sacred Heart in the first round of the WPIAL playoffs Thursday at California University of Pennsylvania’s Lilly Field.
The win was the first playoff victory for the West Greene softball team in 23 years. West Greene meets Beth-Center in the quarterfinals.
Burns also was the winning pitcher for the (14-5) Lady Pioneers. She improved her pitching record to 11-3 and struck out seven batters to give her 101 strikeouts on the season.
OLSH took a 2-0 lead with single tallies in the first and second innings before Chelsea Jones for the Lady Pioneers on the board with a sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth inning. Burns followed with her two-run single to give West Greene a 3-2 lead.
The winners added another run in the sixth with Stacey Wickham tripled and scored on Sarah Burns’ single.
Mickey Cerchiara and Devin McGrath both 3-for-4 for OLSH.
