Greensburg Central downs Southmoreland
ALVERTON – For one quarter of play the Southmoreland Scotties were thinking upset as they held the high powered Greensburg Central Catholic offense to just six points in the first quarter of Friday nights game at Russ Grimm Field before the Centrurions roared back for a 47-10 victory. Early in the second quarter, with the score 6-0, the Scotties sophomore kicker Kevin Hagerman kicked a 41-yard field goal that bounced off the crossbar and through the uprights to pull the Scotties to within three points.
That was as close as they would get.
On the ensuing kickoff, Greensburg Central Catholic’s Max Suter fielded a squib kick at his own 14 yard line and weaved his way through the Southmoreland special teams for an 86-yard touchdown. From that point on the Centurions never looked back.
On the following Southmoreland possession, quarterback Aaron Stasko was intercepted by Nick Sukay who returned the ball 39 yards for a touchdown.
By the time the second quarter ended, the Centurions had put up a 34-point rally and went into the locker room with a commanding 40-3 lead.
“The big plays happened, when you play against a team that has that quality of players you can’t give up the big plays, and we gave up three or four of them in the second quarter,” said Southmoreland coach Brian Pritts.
Suter, who in the first quarter became Greensburg Central Catholics all-time leading rusher, ended the game with three touchdowns and 200 yards rushing on 23 carries to lead all players.
Late in the fourth quarter, the Scotties finally broke through the Central Catholic defense as Stasko completed a 42-yard touchdown pass down the right sidelines to receiver Jeremy Mains.
Following the touchdown, Southmoreland recovered an onside kick only to turn the ball over on downs.
Central Catholic took over at mid-field and held onto the ball for the remainder of the game.
The loss puts a dent in the Scotties’ playoff hopes as they entered the game tied for fourth place in the Interstate Conference with a 2-2 record on the season.
Despite the loss, Pritts remained optimistic about his team’s future.
“You only get to play against No. 1 so many times and this was a great test for us. I thought we played with a lot of heart and hung in with them early and we kept fighting in the second half. We never quit.”
Coming into the game, the Centurions held a four game winning streak over the Scotties winning by an average score of 44-6.
Next Friday Southmoreland play at Brownsville Area.
Friday, Oct. 20 they play at Washington High School and finish the season at home on Friday, Oct. 27 against Yough.
