Pirates trim Santos and Edwards from roster
PITTBSURGH (AP) – Right-hander Victor Santos, who began the season in Pittsburgh’s starting rotation, and infielder Mike Edwards were removed from the Pirates’ 40-man roster Thursday. Edwards accepted an outright assignment to Triple-A Indianapolis. Santos declined and becomes a free agent.
Santos was 5-9 with a 5.70 ERA in 25 appearances, including 19 starts. He did not pitch after Sept. 5, when he gave up four runs and nine hits in 3 1/3 innings during the Pirates’ 6-5 victory over the Cubs.
Santos has a combined 9-22 record with the Brewers and Pirates over the last two seasons.
Edwards was 3-for-16 during several brief stays with the team.
The Pirates are carrying 38 players on the 40-man roster, plus two more on the 60-day disabled list in outfielder Jody Gerut and right-hander Bryan Bullington.
