Rangers edge Flyers in 13-round shootout PHILADELPHIA (AP) – Marcel Hossa beat Antero Niittymaki in the 13th round of a shootout and Henrik Lundqvist stopped all 13 Philadelphia shooters to give the New York Rangers a 5-4 victory over the Flyers on Saturday night.

After 12 Rangers failed to come close to scoring, Hossa finally finished off one of the NHL’s longest shootouts. The Rangers, of course, know a little something about winning long shootouts after going 15 rounds to beat Washington last season.

Michael Nylander, Michal Rozsival, Matt Cullen and Adam Hall scored for the Rangers, with Hall tying it at 4 midway through the third.

Lundqvist finished with 35 saves.

Capitals 5, Hurricanes 2

WASHINGTON – Alex Ovechkin broke a tie with two third-period goals, Alexander Semin had a hat trick, and Washington sent Stanley Cup champion Carolina to its season-opening third straight loss.

Perhaps frustrated by beginning the season with five scoreless periods, Ovechkin – the Calder Trophy winner as top rookie in 2005-06 – went into a prolonged celebration after scoring 8:04 into the third period to put Washington ahead 3-2.

Five minutes later, Ovechkin scored again, this time redirecting defenseman Brian Pothier’s shot from the slot on a power play to make it 4-2.

Canadiens 3, Maple Leafs 2, SO

TORONTO – Michael Ryder scored in a shootout to lift Montreal.

Sheldon Souray and Mike Johnson scored in regulation for the Canadiens, who lost their season-opener in a shootout at Buffalo on Friday night. The Canadiens rallied to tie it in the third period on Mike Johnson’s goal at 6:44.

After Toronto’s Mats Sundin and Montreal’s Chad Higgins scored in the shootout, the Maple Leafs’ next three shooters were stopped and the Canadiens’ next two didn’t score before Ryder got the winner, beating Andrew Raycroft to the glove side.

Thrashers 6, Panthers 0

ATLANTA – Marian Hossa had two goals and an assist, and Kari Lehtonen stopped 22 shots for Atlanta for his fourth career shutout.

Slava Kozlov added a goal and two assists, and Jon Sim, Bobby Holik and Andy Sutton also scored for the Thrashers, coming off a 3-2 shootout loss to Tampa Bay in their season opener Thursday night.

Bruins 3, Lightning 2

TAMPA, Fla. – Patrice Bergeron scored the tiebreaking goal early in the third period and Brad Boyes had a goal and an assist for Boston.

Wayne Primeau also scored for the Bruins, who lost 8-3 at Florida on Friday night in their season opener. Hannu Toivonen stopped 29 shots.

Sabres 4, Senators 3

OTTAWA – Chris Drury had a goal and an assist to help Buffalo extend its season-opening winning streak to three games.

Jason Pominville, Henrik Tallinder and Brian Campbell also scored for the Sabres. Jason Spezza scored twice and Dean McAmmond added a goal for Ottawa.
