Rockets blast past Commodores
JEFFERSON – Friday the 13th proved to be a nightmare for Frazier, as Jefferson-Morgan pounded the Commodores 42-16 at Parker Stadium. Early in the onset, the game looked as it would be a defensive struggle as neither team managed to put points on the board in the first quarter, while also trading fumbles on consecutive drives.
The second quarter, though, proved to be much different as Jefferson-Morgan blew the game wide open, scoring 35 points in the period alone including three Justin Falcon rushing scores.
“I thought it was going to be a tough go, but it really worked out the other way for us,” said Jefferson-Morgan coach Jan Haiden.
Just seconds into the second quarter, Rocket running back Scott Bogdan capped a 51-yard 10-play drive as he punched it in from two yards out, putting the Rockets ahead 6-0.
The Commodores blocked the subsequent extra point attempt.
The Rocket defense wasted no time making an impact either.
On the first play from scrimmage after the kick, Falcon picked off a Joe Kulikoski pass, setting the Rockets up deep into Commodore territory.
Along with the pick, the Rocket defense recorded two fumble recoveries and five sacks, including two from senior Cody Ketchem.
“That’s a team effort out there on defense,” said Haiden. “All year, nobody has really scored a lot of points on us.”
On the ensuing play, Falcon finished what he started, scampering for a 20-yard touchdown and extending the Rockets lead to 12-0 as the two-point attempt was denied.
Falcon and the Rockets were not done though.
Just over four minutes later, Falcon again found the end zone as he broke through a hole in the right side of the line and sprinted 36 yards for the score.
Quarterback Mike Mox converted on the two-point attempt as he snuck through the middle of the line into the end zone to make it 20-0 Rockets.
“Defensively, we were slanting in to where they were running, we just didn’t tackle,” said Frazier coach Lew Sweitzer.
After forcing a three-and-out, the Rockets found themselves in good field position again at the Frazier 47-yard line.
Three plays later, Falcon completed the hat-trick as he ran for a 19-yard score and eclipsed the 100-yard mark. The Rockets converted another two-point attempt as Mox hooked up with receiver Travis Watson making it 28-0.
Falcon would finish the game with 117 yards on 12 carries along with the three touchdowns.
The Mox to Watson connection would be featured again as, after forcing a Commodore three-and-out, the two hooked up for a 35-yard score on a one-play drive with just 1:12 remaining in the first half. John Lawrence added the extra point making it 35-0.
“Our offensive line is doing a good job right now,” said Haiden.
“And our backs, they have to block too, and they block well and run hard.”
