Brownsville tops Uniontown in volleyball
Brownsville won the final two sets, rallying past Uniontown Wednesday for a 3-2 non-section road victory. Uniontown won the first set, 25-19, Brownsville tied it, 25-18, and then the Lady Raiders pulled ahead with a 25-18 win in the third set. The Lady Falcons closed strong, winning the final two sets, 25-20 and 17-15.
Tiera Ramsey had eight service points and four kills for Brownsville (6-13, 1-12) while Bethany Jurczak finished with five service points and four kills. Emily Lucosh added five service points and six kills.
Lauren Wagner led Uniontown (4-13) with 13 kills. Jen Tandarich had 10 kills while Jami Williams finished with four aces.
Brownsville hosts Laurel Highlands tonight while the loss finished the season for Uniontown.
Women’s volleyball
Westminster 3, Waynesburg 2 – The Yellow Jackets raced out to a 2-0 lead, but the visitors couldn’t make it stand in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference loss to the Lady Titans.
Waynesburg won the first two sets, 33-31 and 30-22, but Westminster won the final three, 30-22, 30-24 and 15-13, for the victory.
Laurie Lindner led the Yellow Jackets with 21 kills. Kaci Hlad added 17 kills. Amanda Jo Morgan had six blocks while Katie Morgan finished with 25 digs. Amanda Stout controlled the offense with 55 assists.
Waynesburg slips to 4-5 in the conference and 6-21 overall. Westminster improves to 7-1 in the PAC and 19-8 overall.
Women’s soccer
California (Pa.) 3, Shippensburg 2 – Katie Powell scored with just over six minutes left in the game to give the Vulcans a 3-2 non-conference victory over visiting Shippensburg.
Amanda Heister had a foot in all three scores with a goal in the first half and assists the other two goals. Heister set up Tessa Babik for the first goal of the game, just 1:25 into the game.
Gayle Kuntzman tied the game at 19:13, but Heister returned the lead to the Vulcans at 24:33.
Kuntzman’s second goal of the game at 52:55 tied the game again, but Powell, off assists from Babik and Heister, scored the game-winning goal at 83:52.
Erin Cook made five saves for California.
California (7-11) finishes the season at home Saturday against Lock Haven at noon.
Thomas More (Ky.) 2, Waynesburg 0 – After a scoreless first half, Samantha Smith and Kari Poling scored to give the visitors a Presidents’ Athletic Conference victory over the Yellow Jackets.
Paige Yeich saved 11 shots in the nets for Waynesburg.
The Yellow Jackets are now 1-3 in the conference and 5-9-1 overall while the Saints improve to 4-0 in the PAC and 10-6-0 overall.
Men’s soccer
California (Pa.) 5, Shippensburg 2 – John Pazehoski scored two goals and assisted on another as the Vulcans defeated Shippensburg at home for a PSAC victory.
Pazehoski scored the Vulcans’ first goal, and then assisted, along with Evan Picard, on Felipe Souza’s goal six minutes later.
Shippensburg’s Geoff Bloes’ 13th goal of the season cut the lead in half, but Shakir McCoy scored his first goal about seven minutes later to return the lead to two goals. Pazehoski and Sheldon Graham’s penalty kick closed the scoring for the Vulcans.
Philip Micken made two saves for the Vulcans.
California (6-6-3, 7-9-3) closes the season on Saturday at home at Roadman Park against Lock Haven.
Waynesburg 4, Thomas More (Ky.) 3, OT – Nick Munnell scored five minutes into the overtime period to lift the Yellow Jackets to a Presidents’ Athletic Conference home victory.
David Megel and Tylar Smith spotted the visiting Saints to a 2-0 lead, but Todd Schollaert and Scott Garet netted goals to tie the game for Waynesburg.
Thomas More’s Nate Thrift put the Saints ahead 3-2 at 80:36, only to have Schollaert’s sixth goal of the season tie the game again with under a minute remaining.
Brad Davis made five saves for Waynesburg.
Waynesburg improves to 2-3 in the PAC and 6-10-0 overall. Thomas More falls to 1-2-1 in the conference and 4-8-1 overall.
