Lady Vikings tie for seventh in WPIAL golf finals
BELLE VERNON – Neither the Mount Pleasant girls golf team nor coach Megan Burke were quite sure what to expect Thursday in their first trip to the WPIAL Girls Team Golf Championship at Cedarbrook Golf Course’s Red course in the program’s inaugural season. Mount Pleasant had a good showing the first time out, finishing in a tie for seventh place with Blackhawk with a team score of 407. Mars, behind the one-two punch of the Glew twins, won the team title with a 342 while Peters Twp. was close behind in second with 346.
The Lady Vikings won the Section 1-AAA title the first time out, finishing 10-0 in section play, and, by all accounts, the finish in the district championship capped what was already a great season.
“This is their first experience (in the championship), and I’m very proud of them,” said Burke. “We only have one senior (Allison Homulka) in the starting lineup. The rest are just sophomores.”
The boys have had a long history of success, and the girls seemed poised to follow in those footsteps.
“The two seniors on the team gave out a lot of advice, how to get the mindset how to play,” said Burke. “They learned the importance of getting along as a team.
“I think they’re satisfied with the way they played today.”
Nicole Smith had team medallist honors with a 93. Calissa Vesso carded a 103 with Homulka a shot behind. Courtney Shields’ 107 rounded out the scoring. Rachael Jesso’s 110 was not used.
The Glews were not to be outdone by one another as both Lauren and Marissa shot 6-over-par 78 to share medallist honors.
Mt. Lebanon finished third with a 358, followed by Kiski Area (378), Center (381), Shady Side Academy (386), Blackhawk and Mount Pleasant, Gateway (444) and Franklin Regional (458).
