Monessen rallies for win, knocks Mapletown out of playoff contention Monessen rallied from a 10-0 deficit and peeled off two fourth-quarter touchdowns as they edged past Mapletown 14-10 in Tri-County South action.
Will Pearson scored both of Monessen’s touchdowns on scores of five and three runs.
Pearson nearly eclipsed the century mark with 95 yards on 14 carries.
Frank Jeffries put Mapletown on the scoreboard with a 27 yard field goal kick at 3:20 in the first quarter.
Nick Popernack picked up 55 of his 108 yards at 10:33 with a touchdown run to put the Maples up 10-0 going into the final period.
Mapletown held a slight edge from a statistical standpoint with 198 in total offense compared to 186 from the Greyhounds.
The Maples (4-4, 2-3) were eliminated from playoff contention with the loss.
Belle Vernon 13, Derry 0 – After an impressive win over Uniontown last week, the Belle Vernon squad keeps its playoff hopes alive with a shutout win over Derry in the Keystone Conference.
The Leopards improve to 3-2 in the conference and 4-4 overall.
Carmichaels 7, Bentworth 6 – Jeremy Ganocy scored on a 59-yard interception return as Carmichaels edged past Bentworth in a non-section clash.
Teammate Logan Phillips accounted for 98 yards on 18 carries to lead the offense, while Joby Lapkowicz struggled with 0-for-5 completions passing with an interception.
On the season, Lapkowicz is 51-for-150 for 940 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions.
Bentworth’s Lincoln Gibson scored on a 12-yard scamper late in the fourth quarter to pull them to within one.
Carmichaels is 4-4 overall.
Women’s volleyball
California University of Pa. 3, Indiana University of Pa. 0 – Junior Amber Santavy and freshman Amber Nist combined for 25 kills, 20 digs, four service aces and three blocked shots as the Vulcans swept to a PSAC-West victory.
The victory was the sixth straight for California (25-4, 6-2). The Vulcans won by scores of 30-26, 30-25 and 30-17.
Indiana dropped to 15-12 overall and 2-6 in conference play.
Santavy paced California with 14 kills and added 11 digs.
California returns to action Tuesday for a crucial PSAC match at Lock Haven. The Vulcans trail the first-place Bald Eagles by one game with two conference games remaining.
