Cal women finish soccer season with draw Freshman Amanda Heister scored her 11th goal of the season, equaling the highest single-season total since 2003, as the Vulcans ended the women’s soccer season with a 1-1 tie against Lock Haven in women’s soccer action Saturday.
Cal celebrated senior day by outshooting the Bald Eagles, 14-8, but the visitors tallied the first goal on a thru ball to Stephanie Fisher, who netted her second goal of the season in the 48th minute.
Heister evened the score at 63:05 with a direct kick just outside the penalty area and to the left of the goal. Heister drilled an attempt just inside the near post and out of the reach of diving LH keeper Emily Wagner.
Heister matched the 11 goals in the 2003 season by Brianne Plute and Kelli Rees, which is tied for the seventh-highest season total in team history.
The Vulcans finished the season with a 7-11-1 overall record, the highest win total since finishing the 2003 season with eight victories.
Bethany 1, Waynesburg 0 – The Bethany College women’s soccer team improved their record to 4-10-1 overall and 2-3 in the PAC with a win over visiting Waynesburg (5-10-1, 1-3).
Rachelle Smith found the back of the net at 43:29 for the game’s lone goal.
The Yellow Jackets nearly scored 15 minutes into the second half.
Bison defender Meredith Coyne blocked the shot by Jenna Epler to preserve Bethany’s lead.
Sophomore goalkeeper Courtney Teets picked up the win with four saves in goal.
Smith led the Bison in shots with five of Bethany’s 12 shots.
Women’s volleyball
Kenyon 3, Waynesburg 0; Hiram 3, Waynesburg 1 – The Waynesburg women’s volleyball team dropped a pair of matches Saturday in Hiram, Ohio.
In the first contest, the Yellow Jackets fell to Kenyon 30-27, 30-12 and 30-15.
In the nightcap, Hiram College defeated Waynesburg by the scores of 30-21, 30-28 (Waynesburg), 30-15 and 30-17.
Waynesburg travels to Saint Vincent Oct. 23.
Meadille 3, Penn State-Fayette 1; Penn State-Fayette 3, LaRoche 1 – Penn State-Fayette, The Eberly Campus split Saturday at a triangular at LaRoche College.
In the first game, the Roaring Lions dropped to Meadille, but rallied in the second contest with a win over host LaRoche.
Abby Holbrook led with 17 kills against Meadille, while teammates Abbie Renze and Rachel Dunham added 28 digs and 46 assists.
Holbrook again led in the win over LaRoche with 24 kills.
Renze posted 28 digs and Dunham 35 assists.
The Roaring Lions (19-5, 14-1) are back in action Tuesday at home against Penn State-Beaver starting at 7 p.m.
Men’s soccer
Lock Haven 2, California (Pa.) 1 – John Pazehoski, one of seven seniors honored in pregame ceremonies prior to playing their final collegiate match for California U., scored a first-half goal, but Lock Haven scored on an overtime penalty kick to gain a 2-1 PSAC men’s soccer victory over the Vulcans.
Lock Haven opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, and Pazehoski answered three-minutes later with his team-leading sixth goal of the season and 24th of his career.
The teams played the rest of regulation scoreless, forcing Cal’s team-record sixth overtime game of the season. In the fifth minute of overtime, Lock Haven converted a penalty kick to gain the victory. The Vulcans were 0-3-3 in OT games this season.
Cal, which finished first in the 2004 and 2005 PSAC regular-season standings, finished fifth this season with a 7-10-3 overall record, 6-7-3 in PSAC West play.
Bethany 3, Waynesburg 0 – The Bethany men’s soccer team continued their nine-game unbeaten streak with a win over Waynesburg.
Just before halftime, the Bison broke through for a pair of goals.
In the 41st minute, freshman Jason Straw capitalized on an indirect kick in the six-yard box. Getting credit for the assist was senior Ramon Franklyn.
The goal was Straw’s second of the season, while the assist was the fourth of the year for Franklyn.
With the momentum in Bethany’s corner, McPherson collected his sixth goal of the season during the 43rd minute, as his ball sailed over the Yellow Jacket keeper to give the Bison a 2-0 lead.
The teams battled into the second half until the 71st minute when Bethany scored their third and final goal of the game.
Ashkan Alavy scored the final goal on a breakaway run. The ball was deflected by the goalie, but bounced across the goal line to give the Bison sophomore his third score on the year.
Waynesburg falls to 6-1 overall and 2-3 in the conference.
