Raiders find mud to their liking
WAYNESBURG – Waynesburg jumped out to a 35-13 halftime lead over Brownsville Friday night and never looked back in a 61-20 Interstate Conference victory. Waynesburg Central quarterback-running back Troy Cree once again slipped out of tackles, as he has done all year, in rushing for 173 yards on only nine carries.
Cree scored four times, highlighted by his 54-yard scamper that put the Red Raiders up 28-7. Teammate Clint Podish added another 128 yards on just eight carries to go with his one touchdown.
“It’s always important to win on senior night,” said Waynesburg coach Dave Sarra. “The seniors and the entire team have played hard all year long.”
Podish’s lone score came via a gadget play, as the Red Raiders (5-4, 4-4) called a ‘hook n’ ladder’ and executed it perfectly. Podish received the lateral from teammate Nick Patton and took it 35 yards for the score.
“My father actually suggested I run the play,” Sarra said with a laugh. “Brownsville had the momentum at that point and I wanted to get that play in. It was the right time for it.”
Brownsville (1-8, 1-7) was in the game early thanks in large part to a Dimetrius Williams’ 48-yard touchdown run that cut a Raiders’ lead to 14-7.
Unfortunately, Waynesburg outscored the Falcons 47-13 from midway through the second quarter on.
“We had a lot of young kids playing tonight,” said Brownsville coach Andy Assad. “We played hard until the very end. Waynesburg just has a couple of skill guys who made some plays and we couldn’t contain them.”
The Falcons relied on sophomore quarterback Mike Vasiloff, who finished the night 8 for 16 for 71 yards.
