Frazier explodes in non-league win over Geibel
PERRYOPOLIS – Frazier played on all cylinders Friday night and exploded for a 67-14 win over former Tri-County South Conference foe Geibel Catholic at Commodore Stadium. Geibel (0-2) remained in the Tri-County South this season, but Frazier (1-1) moved to the Black Hills Conference.
“It was one of those games that you don’t see come around very often,” Frazier coach Lew Sweitzer said. “We had some big plays on offense and defense, and a lot of time, we put ourselves in the right place at the right time with our hustle.”
Frazier quarterback Joe Kulikoski completed his first five passes and six of his first seven for 136 yards and two touchdowns in the first half.
“Joey is a real good athlete who can run and has a good arm,” Sweitzer said. “He played a good game for us tonight.”
He hit Jim Traynor late in the first quarter for a 28-yard strike and Tim Holt on a 5-yard touchdown early in the second quarter.
Frazier also scored four touchdowns in the first half on the ground. Fullback Adam Shimko scored on runs off tackle of 24 and 3 yards.
Flanker Vince Conti scored on a 12-yard run in the first quarter, set up by a Commodore fumble recovery and a 35-yard end-around in the second quarter.
The Commodore defense joined the scoring party as Jim Traynor returned a Mick Betler interception for a 50-yard touchdown in the first quarter and also had another pickoff in the first half.
Joe Kulikoski returned an interception 64 yards in the second quarter but was stopped at the 3-yard line before Shimko banged into the end zone midway through the second quarter.
Frazier’s defense held Geibel without a first down until 5:44 in the second quarter when the Commodores committed two personal fouls on a Gator punt.
“I thought our coaches put a good defensive scheme together,” Sweitzer said. “We are playing our linebackers to rush or drop back and they can confuse the opposition.”
Conti returned the second half kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown to extend the Commodores blowout to 60-0.
That was followed by a Traynor fumble recovery for a 38-yard touchdown return.
Making the score 67-0
The clock continued to run in the second half due to the score.
The Gators found some offensive rhythm in the second half.
“You can’t do much when you fall behind over 50 points before halftime but we kept telling the kids not to give up and I don’t think they did,” Geibel head coach Angelo Dippolito said. “I’m not making any excuses but we had a real young team before our three seniors got hurt. So now we’re really in a learning experience, but we have more games to play, so we’re just going to continue to work hard.”
The Gators marched downfield 56 yards late in the third quarter, sparked by quarterback Mick Betler’s running on option-keepers. He banged in for a 4-yard touchdown midway through the third quarter to cap the drive and put Geibel on the scoreboard.
“Our quarterback is only a sophomore and he never played quarterback in his life,” Dippolito said. “He’s learning just like everybody else.
Geibel also put together a 49-yard touchdown drive late in the fourth quarter.
Betler hit Andrew Jackson for a 25-yard strike for the score.
Betler gained 51 yards on 14 carries in the second half.
“Our fans haven’t given up on us and we’re not going to give up on them,” Dippolito said.
Frazier will host Fort Cherry in a conference opener next week, and Geibel will play a conference opener against Mapletown.
