Mikluscak’s 2 goals propel Fillies to 3-0 victory over Yough Kayla Mikluscak scored a pair of goals, one in each half, to lead Laurel Highlands to a 3-0 Section 6-AAA victory Monday night over visiting Yough.
Mikluscak scored the lone goal of the first half from a Morgan Palya assist at 30:24. Kelsey Workman doubled the advantage with a goal at 19:40 in the second half off an Alex Frankhouser assist. Mikluscak then scored about 12 minutes later from another Frankhouser assist.
Laurel Highlands’ Jackie Gaddis faced only one shot while the Lady Cougars’ Hope Sedund turned aside 12.
Laurel Highlands (1-1-1, 2-3-1) hosts Connellsville Wednesday night.
Waynesburg Central 2, Uniontown 0 – Clair Vehar scored in the first half and Melody Cox found the back of the net in the second half while the Lady Raider defense held the home team to just three shots for a Section 6-AAA road victory.
Waynesburg Central (2-1, 3-1) host Albert Gallatin Wednesday in another Section 6-AAA match.
Chartiers-Houston 8, Geibel Catholic 6 – The Lady Bucs built a 4-goal halftime lead, but the Lady Gators rallied back in the second half with three goals in a Section 1-AA home loss.
Chartiers-Houston led 1-0, 3-1 and 5-1 in the first half. Shannon Gurnsey scored a hat trick for the Lady Bucs (1-0-0, 2-2-1) with Sara Treffnuff adding a pair.
Rebecca Sandor and Abby Askyn both scored a pair of goals for the Lady Gators (0-1, 1-1-1) with Mia White and Katie Loya also finding the back of the net. Geibel hosts Beth-Center in another section contest Wednesday at 4 p.m.
Boys golf
Belle Vernon 203, Trinity 231 – The Leopards liked the home course advantage at Willowbrook Golf Course for a non-section victory over Trinity.
Belle Vernon’s Tyber Lustig was medallist with a 2-under-par 34. Brian Luzanski shot a 37 with Jeremy Weslager and Robbie Lazzari both carding 43. Nick Plavchak closed out the scoring rounds for the Leopards (3-7, 1-5) with a 46.
E.J. Morascyk led Trinity (1-7, 0-6) with a 42.
Jefferson-Morgan 202, Ringgold 224 – Matt Kokoska shot a 3-over-par 38 while Josh Kokoska and Justin Hughes both carded 39 to lead the Rockets to a non-section road victory over the Rams at Cedarbrook Golf Course’s Red Course.
Zack Basinger and Brian Scritchfield both carded 43 to round out the scoring rounds.
Chris Fibbi was the low man for Ringgold with a 39.
Jefferson-Morgan (8-0) looks to remain undefeated in Division II, Section 8 this afternoon on the road against Carmichaels.
Upper St. Clair 177, Uniontown 198 – The Red Raiders stepped out of section action with a road trip to St. Clair Country Club, but the Panthers were too tough at home for a non-section win.
Upper St. Clair’s Rob Shorgy was medallist with a 1-under-par 33. Brendan Borst shot a 34 for the Panthers (10-0) with Marshall Brown chipping in a 36.
Seth Rockwell was low man for Uniontown with a 36. Mike Rogers was a shot of his pace and David Bobish finished with a 38. Cory Over’s 42 and Josh Miller’s 45 closed out the scoring.
Uniontown (8-2, 5-1) closes out the first half of the Division I, Section 2 schedule when the Red Raiders play Albert Gallatin at Duck Hollow Golf Club.
Laurel Highlands 196, Brownsville 247 – Josh John fired a 1-over 36 to lead the Mustangs to a non-section home victory at Duck Hollow Golf Club.
Fred David finished with a 37 while Matt McCabe, Maria Battaglia and Ben Thorn all shot 41.
Terry Lent was the low man for Brownsville (1-6) with a 46.
Laurel Highlands (5-3, 3-3) hosts Connellsville this afternoon to close the first half of the Division I, Section 2 schedule.
Chartiers-Houston 182, Waynesburg Central 187 – The Raiders had a pretty good round, but the visiting Bucs were just a little better for a non-section victory at Rohanna’s Golf Course.
Zach Schloemer shot an even-par 33 to lead the Raiders. Rachel Rohanna was a two shots off his pace with Kenny Blackwell shooting a 36.
Chartiers-Houston’s John Popeck also had an even-par round.
Waynesburg (3-4, 3-1) plays Mapletown this afternoon in Division II, Section 8 action and will play a makeup match Wednesday at Carmichaels at Carmichaels Golf Club.
Girls volleyball
Waynesburg Central 3, Carmichaels 0 – The Lady Raiders swept past the home team, 25-8, 25-20, 25-11, for a non-section road victory. Waynesburg (2-1) begins Section 4-AA play tonight at Washington.
Jackie Fontana had a strong defensive night with 11 digs. Becca Phillips led the offense with 13 assists. Allison Baker contributed five blocks and four kills.
Uniontown 3, Mapletown 1 – The Lady Raiders dropped the middle set, but rallied to win the final two for a non-section road victory. Uniontown won the first set 25-14, lost the second, 25-23, and won the last two, 25-19, 25-18.
Andi Giachetti led the way for Uniontown (2-1) with 10 assists, six kills and eight aces. Jami Williams had nine kills and two aces while Jen Tandarich finished with five kills, two assists and three aces.
Uniontown opens Section 2-AAA play tonight on the road at Albert Gallatin.
Frazier 3, Beth-Center 1 – The Lady Commodores dropped the first set, 25-22, but stormed back to win the next three, 25-13, 25-20, 25-14, for a non-section home victory.
Rachel Hudik had a nice well-rounded performance for Frazier (3-0) with 34 assists and 11 service points. Kate Oldham had 19 kills while Erin Kuhn and Megan Leary both contributed eight kills.
Frazier begins Section 6-A action Thursday with a home match against Carmichaels.
Connellsville 3, McKeesport 0 – The Lady Falcons didn’t have many problems on the road, handily defeating the Lady Tigers, 25-10, 25-9, 25-10.
Jessica Cole had a well-rounded performance with 22 service points and nine kills. Megan Saylor controlled the offense with 46 assists. Connellsville (3-1) opens Section 2-AAA action tonight on the road at Canon-McMillan.
Girls golf
Mount Pleasant 196, Southmoreland 240 – The Lady Vikings held on to first place in Section 1-AAA with a good performance against the visiting Lady Scots at Norvelt Golf Course’s Luke’s Links.
Nicole Smith shot a 9-over 42 to lead Mount Pleasant (5-0, 6-0) with Allison Homulka carding a 49.
Sarah Castin was low for Southmoreland (0-5, 0-5) with a 54.
Girls tennis
Section 1-AAA singles – Laura Husband, Connellsville’s No. 1 singles player, won her first match, a 10-3 decision before she ran into Franklin Regional’s Kayllie Wang, the No. 2 seed, for a 10-1 loss.
Megan Parson, the Lady Falcons’ No. 2 player, wasn’t a match for top-seeded Joelle Kissel. The Latrobe freshman won 10-0.
Connellsville returns to section action Wednesday when the Lady Falcons host Hempfield.
Boys cross country
California (Pa.) Invitational – Ambridge’s Bryan Johnson and Joe Tisak took the top two spots Saturday to lead the Bridgers to the boys title at California. Johnson finished the 5K course in 18:52 with teammate Tisak just seven seconds behind.
Uniontown finished second in the team standings with 42 points. Scoring for the Red Raiders were John O’Neal (3rd, 19:06), Dezmine Teets (7th, 19:40), Kameron Schaefer (9th, 19:51), Brodie Kelley (10th, 20:02) and Mark Natural (13th, 21:11).
Waynesburg Central finished fourth overall with 81 points. Finishing for the Raiders were Heath Jacobs (8th, 19:45), Bobby Stitchick (11th, 20:26), Nate Patton (14th, 21:14), Chris Remsing (16th, 21:24) and Dominic Denicola (32nd, 25:39).
Frazier had a quartet of runners compete in Steve Cowen (21st, 22:00), Tristan Bartolomucci (29th, 23:49), Paul Bubnash (31st, 25:14) and Jarrett Eakins (33rd, 25:51).
Girls cross country
California (Pa.) Invitational – The Ambridge girls made it a sweep of the team titles Saturday, winning the title with 33 points. Lauren Sittler led the Lady Bridgers home in a time of 21:14.
Waynesburg Central finished second with 49 points. Maria Shepas was second in a time of 21:43 with Lexi Ribar fifth in 23:09. Elizabeth Tharp (9th, 25:32), Alyssa Hook (10th, 25:40) and Shadowe Martin (23rd, 28:22).
Uniontown was third with 80 points, with Michelle Naymick (6th, 24:20), Jennifer Naymick (12th, 25:58), Stacy Lloyd (17th, 26:57), Brandy Risha (18th, 26:59) and Sammy Lenhart (27th, 29:32) scoring for the Lady Raiders.
Frazier was five points behind in the team standings. Jessica Hudik was seventh in 25:22, with Heather Priester (15th, 26:42), Jenna Boyles (20th, 27:38), Rebecca Leonard (21st, 27:41) and Joyce Carson (22nd, 27:54).
Men’s cross country
California (Pa.) Invitational – The Mercyhurst men were tough to beat with a team score of 26 to finish 36 points ahead of the host squad Saturday.
Point Park’s Jess Bender finished the 7.2K course in 24:22 with Mercyhurst’s Kenneth Foster 16 seconds behind in second. California’s Eric Reger was right on Foster’s heels, trailing only by one second for third place.
Women’s cross country
California (Pa.) Invitational – The Saint Vincent College women overpowered the field Saturday morning, taking four of the top five places to earn first place in the five-team field.
Mercyhurst’s Kathryn Jarocki was the first to finish the 5K course in 20:40.
The Lady Bearcats had the next four finishers, Laura Magnuson (20:40), Tess Jones (20:45), Kara Shirley (20:50) and Amanda Connell (21:06). Brownsville graduate Julie Kromer finished 41st with a time of 26:59.
Kristi Heidkamp was California’s top finisher, placing 10th in 22:12.
