Football Walsh player of the week

Waynesburg graduate and Washington & Jefferson senior cornerback Cory Walsh has been named the ECAC Division III Defensive Player of the Week.

Walsh, who also earned the PAC Defensive Player of the Week award on Monday, Sept. 11, posted 12 tackles (seven solo), three pass breakups and one interception in the Presidents’ 22-10 victory over Allegheny last Saturday at Cameron Stadium. He clinched the victory in the closing seconds after intercepting a pass and racing 36 yards for a touchdown.

On the season, Walsh ranks second on the team with 21 tackles, including 15 solo stops. He is 27th in the nation with 7.5 solo tackles per game and.

Walsh increased his career totals to 132 tackles, 19 pass breakups and three interceptions.

Anderson feted

Bethany College senior linebacker Cliff Anderson was named the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Special Teams Player of the Week for Sept. 18.

The West Greene graduate recovered an onside kick with 41 seconds remaining that propelled the Bison into their final scoring drive in a come-from-behind 34-28 victory over Ohio Wesleyan. Anderson also had a strong defensive effort with a team-high nine tackles and a forced fumble.

Soccer

Davis honored

Waynesburg College sophomore goalkeeper Brad Davis was selected as the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Defensive Player/Goalkeeper of the Week. In matches against Penn State-Altoona and Thiel, Davis made seven saves while allowing one goal, a penalty kick, over 180 minutes of action. He registered his first shutout of the season in the 1-0 win over Thiel.

Davis has started five of six games for the Yellow Jackets, making 36 saves with a 1.80 goals against average.

Jackets earn honors

Waynesburg College freshman forward/midfielder Joanna Butterworth was Presidents’ Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week and junior goalkeeper Amy Mills was the Defensive/Goalkeeper Player of the Week for the week ending Sept. 18.

Butterworth scored both goals in the Yellow Jackets’ 2-1 win over Hood. Mills scored her second shutout of the season with in a 1-0 PAC victory against Thiel.

Butterworth leads Waynesburg with five goals, 10 points and a .333 shot percentage.

Basketball

U.S. women advance

SAO PAULO, Brazil – Candace Parker and Tina Thompson each scored 14 points, and the two-time defending champion United States beat the Czech Republic 63-50 Monday night to secure a quarterfinal berth in the women’s world basketball championship.

Diana Taurasi added 13 points in the Americans’ victory over the European champs.

Earlier, Lauren Jackson scored 30 points and helped Australia stay unbeaten heading into the quarters with an 83-49 victory over Argentina.

Australia finished first in Group E, followed by Spain and Brazil. Lithuania claimed the last quarterfinal berth in the group over Argentina based on point differential.

Amaya Valdemoro scored 39 points, and Ana Montanana added 11 in Spain’s 75-55 victory over Lithuania.

Iziane Castro Alves had 17 points to lead Brazil to an 82-41 rout of Canada. But the host team lost veteran Janeth dos Santos Arcain, who sprained her right ankle and was carried off the court. Team doctor Carlos Eduardo Marques said her condition was not serious.

Russia and France claimed the final two quarterfinals spots in Group F. France lost to China 66-64, but the two-point margin helped the French advance. Lijie Miao scored 23 points to lead China.

Russia’s Ilona Korstin scored 26 points in a 96-81 win over Cuba.
