Uniontown golfers earn share of first place

By The 10 min read

Mount Pleasant coach Matt Gross’ words unfortunately rang too true for his Vikings Thursday when they met Uniontown at Duck Hollow Golf Club with first place in Division I, Section 2 on the line. The Vikings’ coach felt his team had to match the winning score of 196 when it played the Red Raiders the first time for a shot, and that score would’ve been enough as Uniontown rose to the occasion to defeat Mount Pleasant, 197-203, to gain a share of first place.

Both teams are 9-1 in the section with four matches remaining. Uniontown improves to 12-1 overall while the Vikings slip to 9-2.

“Seniors Seth Rockwell and David Bobish were on the last winning team in 2003,” Uniontown coach Aaron Scott said of the upward swing the program has been in the past three years.

The pair came through for the Red Raiders with Rockwell finishing at with a 1-over-par 36 and Bobish carding a 38. Allen Zieglar played well at the No. 5 man with a 39. Josh Miller had a 40 and Mike Rogers a 44 to close the scoring.

“I knew we had to be under 200,” said Scott. “We were hoping to be in this spot (for the section title). My pre-game speech was nothing. I told them to go play the course. They knew how important this match was.”

Anthony Prailey was team medallist for the Vikings with a 36. Josh Coccagna and Jordan Jones both shot 41 with Alex Urban a shot off their pace. Mike Bando chipped in a 43.

Scott is obviously pleased the way his golfers are playing at this point of the season.

“I’m very proud of my kids, and how they handled the pressure in this match. Both teams are playing well now. To be tied for first with Mount Pleasant is an honor.”

The players from both squads will meet again Monday in the individual sectional qualifiers at Timber Ridge Golf Course.
