Cal blanks Edinboro in women’s soccer, 2-0 California freshman Amanda Heister scored a goal and an assist in the first 15 minutes of the match as the Vulcans downed Edinboro, 2-0, in PSAC West women’s soccer action Saturday.
The Vulcans (4-6, 2-4 PSAC W) snapped a four-game losing streak, including three-straight shutouts, and avenged a 4-1 setback vs. Edinboro earlier this season.
Eight minutes into the match, freshman Ashleigh Mohney opened the scoring with assists by sophomore Katie Powell and Heister.
Heister added the insurance goal in the the 14th minute of the game. It raised Heister’s team-leading season totals to seven goals, three assists and 17 points.
Edinboro outshot the hosts, 10-6, including seven in the second half as the Fighting Scots tried to break the shutout of Fr. GK Erin Cook.
The Cal women’s soccer team returns to play Tuesday at Wheeling Jesuit 7 p.m.
College volleyball
California senior hitters Allison Liptak and Jefferson-Morgan graduate Shanna Yourchik combined to lead the Vulcans to a pair of non-league volleyball shutout victories over East Stroudsburg Saturday at Indiana, Pa.
The Vulcans downed ESU in the morning match, 30-24, 30-23, 30-22, then improved to 12-3 overall for the season with a 30-26, 30-18, 30-21 decision over Shippensburg in the afternoon.
Yourchik had 10 kills, one solo block and six block assists against ESU, then dominated the afternoon match vs. the Raiders with 10 kills, another solo block and seven block assists. Yourchik finished with a 71.4 hitting percentage against Shippensburg.
Liptak posted a team high 14 kills in the win vs. ESU, then added six kills and nine digs in the win vs. Shippensburg.
Senior Amanda Evans had 15 kills and eight block assists in the two matches while freshman Marta Hodge had team-highs of 13 digs vs. ESU and 15 digs vs. Shippensburg.
Freshman Renata da Silva was also strong in setting up the offense, contributing 72 assists in the two matches.
She also had five block assists and seven digs vs. East Stroudsburg, then added seven digs and four service aces vs. SU.
The Vulcans return to Hamer Hall Tuesday for a 7 p.m. PSAC West clash against arch-rival Lock Haven.
