Lustig drains 30-footer as Leps beat Mustangs in sudden-death Belle Vernon and Albert Gallatin battled to a 206-206 tie, but in sudden death, Tyler Lustig drained a 30-foot put on the second hole at Duck Hollow G.C. to lift the Leopards to a Division I, Section 2 boys golf win.
Lustig led all golfers with his medallist performance of 37.
Albert Gallatin’s Jake Magerko placed second with a 38, and teammate Nick Samples finished third with a 39.
Other Belle Vernon golfers included Brian Luzanski (43), Chris McConnell (47), Kyle Naden (42), Nolan Russell (42) and Jeremy Weslager (42).
Albert Gallatin’s Tom Corazzi (44), Carl Weber (47) and Scott Marchezak (44) also turned in cards.
The Colonials (5-6, 6-7) look to rebound Thursday in an exhibition match against a red-hot Jefferson-Morgan team at Greene County C.C.
Uniontown 211, Southmoreland 212 – Seth Rockwell carded a 2-over par 38 as Uniontown edged host Southmoreland in Division I, Section 2 action.
Southmoreland’s Jared Watkiss was next in the scoring column with a 39, while teammates Nate Hoburn and Taylor Campbell carded a pair of 41s on the front nine at Timber Ridge G.C.
Other Uniontown golfers included Josh Miller (42), David Bobish (43), Mike Rogers (45), Allan Zieglar (44) and Cory Over (44).
Jeff Crane (43), Victor Alvarado (56) and Ben Poorbaugh (48) rounded out the scoring for the Scotties.
The Red Raiders (10-1, 14-2) host Connellsville Thursday.
Beth-Center 223, Carmichaels 230 – Zac Nicola fired a 2-over par 39 as Beth-Center defeated Carmichaels in a Division II, Section 8 match.
Carmichaels’ Jeff McWilliams finished one stroke off the pace, and B-C’s Teddy Yanak rounded out the top three golfers with a 41.
Other Bulldog golfers included Grant Looman (46), John Hosa (48) and Travis Crawford (49).
Rounding out Carmichaels’ scorers were Ian McCombs (46), Zach Wolfe (46), Dan Lasko (47) and Tim Voithofer (51) over the front nine at Carmichaels G.C.
The Mikes (4-5, 5-7) are back in action against California Thursday at Carmichaels G.C.
Connellsville 194, Ringgold 235 – Cody Boors shot a 1-over 35 en route to an easy Division I, Section 2 Connellsville win over Ringgold.
Teammates Devin Keno shot a 38 for second place, while Jonathan Luczka and Braedon Foreman completed the top three golfers with a pair of 39s.
Tyler Nicholson’s 43 complete the Falcon scoring.
Chris Fibbi turned in the low round for Ringgold and David Marchewka followed with a 44.
Alex Carroll (47), Alex Allen (52) and Cory Young (52) completed the Ram scoring.
Connellsville (7-4) plays Thursday at Uniontown.
Frazier 201, Charleroi 245 – Marcus Wingrove turned in a 37 as Frazier cruised to an easy Division II, Section 2 win over visiting Charleroi.
Mike Onuska placed second overall with a 39 and Craig Rebovich rounded out the top three golfers with a 41 at Linden Hall G.C.
Rounding out the Commodores’ scoring are John Shandor (42), Brian Null (42) and Corey Martini (42).
Frazier improves to 6-3 in the section and 9-3 overall.
Mapletown 200, Brownsville 219 – Brownsville’s Ron Jones shot even-par 33, but Mapletown’s Ethan Kovach, Joel Kovach and Don Hilenbrant each shot 36s as they upended the Falcons in Division II, Section 8 play.
Mapletown’s Ryan Wilson (45), Charlie Grim (47) and Kelly Rice (50) rounded out the scoring.
Mike Peton (44), Mark Thomas (48), Jeremy Kopacko (45), Jacob Lewis (49) and Paul Tate (55) completed the scoring for Brownsville.
Jefferson-Morgan 196, California 251 – Jefferson-Morgan continues its winning ways with a Division II, Section 8 win over California, behind Matt Kokoska’s 37.
The Rockets made it a clean sweep over the Trojans with Brian Scritchfield shooting a 38 and Josh Kokoska a 39 on the front nine at Greene County C.C.
Zack Basinger (40) and Justin Hughes (42) also turned in cards for J-M.
Derek Wible shot a 47 for California’s low round, while Phillip Langley (49) and Travis Van Olst (50), Adam Schaum (52) and Dominic Roach (53) completed the California scoring.
Jefferson-Morgan (10-0, 15-1) visits Albert Gallatin today in non-section play.
The loss drops California to 1-8 in the section and 1-9 overall.
Girls tennis
Connellsville 5, Derry 0 – Laura Husband made quick work of Trisha Sheffler 6-0, 6-1 in No. 1 singles and it was all Connellsville after that, as the Lady Falcons blanked visiting Derry in a non-section match.
Megan Parsons defeated Ashley Bosco 6-2, 6-3 in the second singles match and Amy Lucas downed Lindsay Kromel 6-1, 6-0 in No. 3 singles.
The team of Kayla Naugle and Emily Stout upended Ashley Kuhns and Jessica Cogan 6-0, 6-1 in the first doubles, while Megan Jacobs and Kristina Herman made it a clean sweep in No. 2 doubles with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Katey Okert and Nicola Scipio.
The Lady Falcons (10-3, 5-3) face Norwin at 4 p.m. today.
Boys cross country
Connellsville 15, Brownsville 50 – Joe Villaneuva crossed the finish line in 17:09 and set a new course record as Connellsville cruised to an easy exhibition win over host Brownsville.
Connellsville (4-0, 6-0) occupied nine of the top 10 places as Arlo Helmes finished second with a time of 18:19 and Alan Nedley placed third in 18:22.
Teammates Jeremy Molinaro (18:28) and Nathan Richter (18:59) placed fourth and fifth.
Cameron Coffey (19:12) was sixth and the only Brownsville runner to crack the top 10.
Nick Zurawski (19:27), Dennis Curry (19:55), Nick Mongell (20:18) and James Butts (20:36) completed the top 10 finishers.
Girls cross country
Connellsville 15, Brownsville 50 – Mary Beth Giles crossed the finish line in 21:34 as Connellsville rolled past host Brownsville in exhibition action.
Teammates April Shultz (24:25) and Erica Brooks (24:25) comprised the top three places.
Heidi Halfhill (25:02), Kayle Booher (25:15) and Julie Burns (25:20) were the next three Connellsville finishers.
Brownsville’s Alex Wasko (25:29) and Rebecca Bruschi (25:38) placed eighth and ninth, while teammate Betsy Johnson rounded out the top 10 in 25:58.
The Connellsville squad improves to 4-0 in the section and 6-0 overall. It hosts AG next Wednesday.
Volleyball
California 3, Brownsville 0 – Emily Lucosh posted two kills and two blocks, but California had the last laugh with a shutout victory over Brownsville in Section 5-AA action (25-13, 25-16, 25-12).
Falcon teammate Jen Sheridan added three service points.
Brownsville (0-7, 4-8) looks to put one in the win column Thursday at Belle Vernon.
Waynesburg Central 3, McGuffey 0 – Lindsey Pollock posted six service points and Emily Bosworth added eight kills as Waynesburg Central downed host McGuffey in Section 4-A action (25-18, 25-24, 25-23).
Bekah Phipps totaled 11 assists and Jackie Fontana added 16 digs.
The Lady Raiders (5-5, 3-4) remain on the road Thursday as they take on Carlynton.
Girls soccer
Geibel Catholic 4, Serra Catholic 2 – Serra Catholic’s Erika Tatrai scored first at the 35:08 mark in the first half, and after that it was all Geibel Catholic as they picked up a non-section win.
Katy Loya found the back of the net for the Lady Gators at 7:57 in the first half for their first goal.
Mia White opened the second half with a goal from Maura Lamondola at 35:28.
Teammate Rebecca Sandor was next in the scoring column with a goal at 14:56 followed by Jessica Davis’ direct kick goal at 1:22 remaining in the contest.
Mary Beth Saluga posted 13 saves for Geibel Catholic.
Geibel returns to Section 1-AA action at 7 p.m. today at Chartiers-Houston.
Boys soccer
Brownsville 4, McGuffey 3 – Christian Sally scored three goals and Marc Mammarella a goal as Brownsville defeated visiting McGuffey in Section 5-AA action.
Sally put the Falcons on the board with 32:17 in the first half on a Mammarella assist.
Mammarella assisted on all three Sally goals.
Brent Vanderhoof scored McGuffey’s first goal in the first half at 1:37.
Teammates James Gross and Devin Silvers tied the game early in the second half, but Sally sealed the deal at 5:17 to ice the victory.
Josh Roberts posted 13 saves for the Falcons and the team accounted for 11 shots on goal.
Next up on the schedule is Beth-Center in a non-section clash today at home.
McKeesport 7, Albert Gallatin 1 – Emmitt Roper scored Albert Gallatin’s lone goal on an assist from Anthony Stevens, but visiting McKeesport turned out seven goals for the easy win.
Mark Marshall was in at goal for the Colonials and he posted 13 saves.
Albert Gallatin (1-6) looks to put one in the win column Thursday at Baldwin.
College volleyball
Waynesburg 3, Bethany 0 – Laurie Linder and A.J. Morgan each had 13 kills as Waynesburg rolled past Bethany with the scores of 30-23, 30-24 and 30-22.
Amanda Staudt had 41 assists, while Katie Morgan added 32 digs and seven blocks.
Women’s tennis
Waynesburg 9, Bethany 0 – The Yellow Jackets continued Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) play with a 9-0 win over Bethany on Tuesday afternoon.
Waynesburg jumped ahead early by winning all three doubles matches. Senior Jenn Knight and sophomore Laura Garcia defeated Bethany’s Ashley Current and Kathleen Thompson by an 8-1 count. The freshmen duo of Allie Horochak and Jess Mally claimed a 9-8 victory at second doubles, while sophomore Evelyn Fabian and senior Sara DePiano completed the sweep for the Yellow Jackets with an 8-0 win over Elise Gardner and Jen Hubbell.
Knight improved the Waynesburg score with an easy 6-0, 6-0 win in singles at the No. 1 spot, while Garcia extended the lead with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Thompson.
Horochak posted a win by a 6-3, 6-1 count over Kati DeMundo, and DePiano pushed the Yellow Jackets to 7-0 with her 6-3, 7-6 win at the No. 4 position over Katie Erdy.
Fabian took her singles win in a 6-1, 6-1 count over Bethany’s Gardner, while Mally, the reigning PAC Player of the Week, capped the 9-0 Yellow Jacket shutout with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Hubbell.
With the win over Bethany, Waynesburg moves to 3-3 on the season, and 2-0 in PAC play. The Yellow Jackets take a break from conference play this week when it hosts Penn State-Altoona on Thursday, Sept. 28. First serve is set for 3 p.m.
