Jacobs earns MVP honor at Hempfield Invitational Laurel Highlands’ Breehana Jacobs was named the Track MVP of the Hempfield Girls Invitational Saturday after winning the 100 and 200, leading the Fillies to 56 team points to finish among the leaders in the 17-team field.

Jacobs won the 100 in 12.0 seconds and the 200 in 25.4.

Aleesha Washington wasn’t far behind in the 100, finishing second in 12.3 seconds. Washington, a sophomore, competed in the long jump for just the second time in her short career, and came away with first place with a jump of 16-5. She also anchored the 400 relay team of Aliana Vignali, Meg Mahoney and Kayla Mikluscak to a fourth-place finish in 52.1 seconds.

Casey Conn rewrote the team record books by winning the pole vault with a best effort of 10-6. Teammate Lauren Molchan was fifth in the event with a vault of 9-6.

Cassie Wallace was fifth in the 3,200 with a time of 12:29.

Laurel Highlands travels to Uniontown Tuesday for a key Section 2-AAA meet starting at 3:30 p.m.

High school softball

Hempfield 3, Albert Gallatin 2 – The Lady Colonials were done in by a little “2-out lightning” as the Lady Spartans rallied in the bottom of the seventh for two runs for a Section 1-AAAA home victory.

With runners on second and third with two outs, Ashley Pisone, with two strikes, stroked the game-winning single for Hempfield.

Albert Gallatin scored first in the top of the second inning on Gabby Ross’ run-scoring single. Hempfield (7-0, 8-1) came right back in the bottom of the inning to tie the game.

The Lady Colonials regained the lead with an unearned run in the top of the fifth.

Jen Lewellen (2-4) took the loss for Albert Gallatin, striking out six and walking four while allowing four hits. She had a good game at the plate with a pair of doubles. Megan Angelo also doubled for Albert Gallatin.

Jamie Swarm struck out seven and walked only one in the victory.

Albert Gallatin (1-4, 2-4) hosts Latrobe Monday afternoon.

College baseball

Washington & Jefferson 12, Waynesburg 4 – With the game tied at 1-1 after two innings, the Presidents put up four runs in the top of the third inning and pushed the game out of reach with five more runs in the fifth for a Presidents’ Athletic Conference road victory.

Waynesburg added single runs in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings.

Landon Sinclair led the way for the Yellow Jackets (5-5, 12-11) with a single, double and triple, and two runs scored. Jon Conn added a pair of doubles to the Waynesburg attack.

Bryan Leones (1-3) took the loss for Waynesburg, allowing 10 runs, five earned, on eight hits in 4 2-3 innings pitched.

Ian Poole (4-0) went five innings for the victory, allowing three earned runs on nine hits while striking out five and walking one.

California (Pa.) 5, Shippensburg 2; Shippensburg 7, California (Pa.) 2 – Chris Doerschner tossed a four-hitter in the first game as the visiting Vulcans remained tied for first place in the PSAC West.

Doerschner (6-1) allowed four hits for the single runs in the first and seventh innings, striking out seven and walking one.

Dustin Woodring had a two-run single in the first inning, and Drew Aniceti brought home a pair of runs in the third inning.

The Vulcans scored two unearned runs in the first inning of the second game, but that’s all winning pitcher Andrew Burke would allow as the Raiders earned a split for a share of the conference lead.

The teams are tied atop the conference with 8-4 records. California is 22-11 overall while Shippensburg is 18-15.

College softball

Lock Haven 3, California (Pa.) 2; Lock Haven 5, California (Pa.) 0 – The defending PSAC and NCAA champions were just a little too much for the visiting Vulcans, sweeping a PSAC West doubleheader.

Meghan Johnson gave up five hits and five walks in the opening-game loss. Amanda Collins had an RBI single and scored California’s second run later in the game.

California could only muster four hits in the second game.

California (6-6, 9-13) has PSAC road doubleheaders at Indiana (Pa.) and Slippery Rock this week.

Men’s golf

West Virginia Wesleyan Golf Tournament – California’s Jon Lodovico tied for third and the Vulcans finished fourth in the 11-team field in the two-day tournament held Thursday and Friday. Lodovico shot 4-over 76 in both rounds to tie Clarion’s Justin Moose and Tyler Critchfield of the host school.

California scored 630, two strokes ahead of Indiana (Pa.). Clarion won the team title with a 609.

Brownsville’s Josh Seelye tied for 37th after shooting a two-round total of 168.

Women’s tennis

California (Pa.) 7, Georgetown 0 – The Vulcans cruised past Division I Georgetown for a non-section road victory and their best start in the program’s history.

California improves to 23-1 overall with its 19th shutout in 24 matches.

Inga Chiligaryan, Lisa Santoro, Helena VanEysendeyk, Yumi Matsuto, Nina Reiswich and Olga Alekseeva all won their singles matches. Chiligaryan and Matsuto, Santoro and VanEysendeyk, and Reiswich and Katie Anderson completed the shutout with victories in doubles.
