Waynesburg wins, stays on pace for playoff berth Waynesburg Central broke the game open with three runs in the fifth inning Friday afternoon and continued on for an 8-2 Section 2-AA victory over visiting Burgettstown.

The Raiders remained on pace for a playoff berth with the victory, improving to 4-2 in the section and 4-5 overall. The Blue Devils slip to 3-3 in the section and 5-5 overall.

Waynesburg scored single runs in the bottom of the first, second and fourth innings before the three-run outburst in the sixth. Taylor Moore’s RBI single was the key hit of the inning after Mitchell Monas led off the inning with a double.

Monas finished with a double and triple while Nick Stewart had a double and single. Corey Titchenell also had a double for the Raiders.

Ken Blackwell struck out 11 and walked none for the victory.

The two teams meet again today at noon when the Raiders travel to Burgettstown.

Belle Vernon 6, West Mifflin 4 – Belle Vernon stunned host West Mifflin, knocking the Titans out of first place in Section 4-AAA and improving the Leopards’ playoff chances.

West Mifflin falls to 9-2 overall and 6-2 in the section, while Belle Vernon ups its marks to 7-6 and 5-3.

One game separates the top five teams in the section with Thomas Jefferson (4-1) standing in first, followed by the Titans, Steel Valley (4-2), the Leopards and Trinity (4-3).

Bentworth 4, Mapletown 0 – Bentworth moved to within one-half game of front-runners California and Carmichaels with a victory over visiting Mapletown.

The Bearcats improve to 8-2 overall and 5-2 in the section. The Maples fall to 1-8 and 1-6.

High school softball

Bentworth 11, California 1 – California lost to visiting Bentworth to fall one game behind third-place Fort Cherry in Section 1-A.

The defeat drops the Lady Trojans to 5-7 overall and 4-5 in the section.

The Lady Bearcats (12-2, 10-2) are in second place, one game behind undefeated Chartiers-Houston (10-0).

Washington 4, Beth-Center 2 – The visitors went ahead with two runs in the top of the sixth inning, and then added an insurance run in the seventh for a Section 2-AA road victory.

Beth-Center scored two run in the bottom of the first, but Washington cut its deficit in half with a single run in the second. Tiara Bistarkey’s double scored both runs in the sixth.

Amanda Baughman earned the victory and had one of Washington’s five hits with a double. Jenna Phillips also doubled in the victory. Bistarkey added a single.

Washington remains atop the standings with a section mark of 11-0 and an overall record of 15-1. Beth-Center evens it section record at 4-4 while slipping to 6-5 overall.

Boys tennis

Norwin 3, Connellsville 2 – The Falcons needed to win only one of the three singles matches after sweeping the two doubles matches, but the Knights rallied to win a very close matches at No. 1 and 3 singles for a Section 1-AAA home victory.

Connellsville’s No. 1 doubles pairing of Jon Ambrisco and Andy Trump dropped only five games against Bill Boyer and Aaron Blackham, as did the No. 2 doubles pair of Tom Hann and Nick Nagy in their win over Chris Kukic and Jordan Hantz.

The Falcons’ Dave Witt took his No. 1 singles match to a pair of tiebreakers, but Norwin’s John Babyak slipped by in both, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (2). The Knights’ Lee Archinal tied the match with his 6-2, 6-4 win over Blake Michaux at No. 2 singles.

Chris Coffman was the Falcons last opportunity, and the Falcons’ No. 3 singles player gave a game performance before losing to Nick Gigliotti, 6-4, 7-5.

Connellsville (2-8, 2-8) hosts Hempfield Monday at 4 p.m. before closing the season with another section match at home against Latrobe.

McGuffey 5, California 0 – The Highlanders lost only four games in sweeping the three singles matches, and only five in the two doubles victories for a Section 1-AA victory.

McGuffey’s John Michalko, at No. 1 singles, and Ryan Patterson, at No. 2 singles, won by 6-0, 6-1 scores over Maddie Vargo and Nick Wohar. Ben Dunaway defeated the Trojans’ Hannah Min at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-1.

The Highlanders’ Vince Finelli and Ben Smith beat Nick Balla and Jocob Monroe at No. 1 doubles, 6-1, 6-3. The No. 2 doubles team of Taylor Sprawls and Camden Williams wrapped up the victory with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Tara Prentice and Katie Bakewell at No. 2 doubles.

College baseball

Thomas More (Ky.) 15, Waynesburg 7 – The Saints scored five in the bottom of the first, two in the second and five more in the third to cruise past the visiting Yellow Jackets for a Presidents’ Athletic Conference victory.

Landon Sinclair led the Waynesburg attack with his first home run, a single, three RBIs and a run scored. Brandon Dittmar went 3-for-5, with a double and two singles. Chad Litten had a double and single, and Adam Bear also had a two-hit game.

Drew Archbold (0-3) only went two innings to take the loss.

College softball

Grove City 6, Waynesburg 5 (11 innings); Waynesburg 4, Grove City 1 – The visiting Yellow Jackets rebounded in the second game for a split of a Presidents’ Athletic Conference doubleheader at Grove City.

Waynesburg scored single runs in the second and fifth innings while the Lady Wolverines had one in the fifth and tied the game in the seventh. Grove City scored two in the 10th, only to have the Yellow Jackets tie the game in the bottom of the inning. Grove City scored two again in the 11th inning, but Waynesburg couldn’t only push one run across in the bottom of the inning.

Waynesburg Central graduate Autumn Minor (7-7) allowed 10 hits while going the distance for Waynesburg, striking out nine and walking only one. Four Waynesburg errors led to five unearned runs.

Melissa Schrecengost had two doubles and a single to lead the Waynesburg attack. Kristyn Klueg went 2-for-4 with two RBIs while Minor and Haley Kramer both had two singles.

Waynesburg (2-8, 8-16) scored all of its runs in the fourth inning to win the second game. The Yellow Jackets belted out 10 hits, including a 3-for-3 performance by Courtney DeFalco. Karina Graziani improved to 1-2 with the win, stroking out two and walking two.

Waynesburg is now 2-8 in the conference and 8-16 overall. Grove City goes to 1-9 in the PAC and 8-18 overall.
