Edinboro snaps Cal U’s 10-game win streak Curtis Ingram hit a short jumper capped Edinboro’s rally in the final six minutes to give the Fighting Scots a 49-48 win Wednesday over visiting California (Pa.) and snap the Vulcans 10-game winning streak.
Edinboro held California scoreless over the final 6:36 of the game, overcoming a 6-point deficit for the home victory. Edinboro led at the half, 28-22.
California, ranked No. 2 in the regional rankings, lost for the fifth-straight time at Edinboro. The Vulcans slip to 5-1 in the PSAC West and 16-4 overall. The Fighting Scots are now 4-2 in the conference and 14-7 overall.
California made just 8-of-25 field goals in the first half and only 19-of-51 for the game. Edinboro didn’t fair much better, making 20-of-51 field goal attempts.
Osborne Gardner was the only player for California in double figures with 12 points. Ron Banks added eight points and a team-high nine rebounds. Connellsville’s James Hairston scored six points and grabbed four rebounds.
Daren Tielsch led the Fighting Scots with a game-high 17 points. Curtis Ingram added 13.
Washington & Jefferson 85, Waynesburg 63 – The Presidents pulled away in the second half, outscoring the Yellow Jackets, 42-27, for a convincing Presidents’ Athletic Conference road victory.
W&J improves to 5-3 in the conference and 8-12 overall. Waynesburg falls to 2-6 in the PAC and 9-10 overall.
Waynesburg’s Jered Gamble made 5-of-9 3-point attempts to finish with a team-high 18 points. Beau Wilson and Josh Parisi both scored 12 for the Yellow Jackets.
Brandon Studer led the Presidents with 17 points. Wahab Owloabi scored 14 and Jon Koch added 12 in the win.
Women’s basketball
Edinboro 77, California (Pa.) 59 – The visiting Vulcans fell behind by 18 points at the half, and couldn’t recover for a PSAC West road loss.
California slips to 3-3 in the conference and 13-7 overall. Edinboro pulls up to a tie with the Vulcans at 3-3 with an overall mark of 11-9.
April Smith finished with a double-double for the Vulcans, scoring 14 points and grabbing a game-high 13 rebounds. Brooque Williams scored a team-high 15 points.
Edinboro’s Kelly Calderone was tough for the California defense to handle, scoring a game-high 26 points. Samantha Reimer scored 16, Kelsey Conklin finished with 13, and Rachel Johnson added 12.
Edinboro had a good shooting night, making 25-of-49 field goal attempts and 22-of-26 free throw attempts.
Washington & Jefferson 70, Waynesburg 47 – The Presidents led by 17 at the half and never looked back for a Presidents’ Athletic Conference road victory.
W&J improves to 6-2 in the conference and 13-7 overall. Waynesburg goes to 3-5 in the conference and 8-11 overall.
Katie Lewandowski was the lone Waynesburg player in double figures with 10 points. Michaelene Jones and Waynesburg Central grad Jeannette Wonsettler both scored nine points with Wonsettler grabbing a team-high six rebounds.
Kaleigh Bangor led the Presidents with 10 points.
Girls basketball
Clairton 61, Frazier 26 – The visiting Lady Bears held Frazier scoreless in the first quarter, and then cruised to a Section 3-A road victory. Clairton improves to 7-2 in the section and 15-6 overall. Frazier falls to 2-8 in the section and 7-13 overall.
Carele Smith and Kameron Towns shared scoring honors for Clairton with 18 points apiece.
Kristen Joseph led the Lady Commodores with 11 points.
Boys basketball
Washington 72, Waynesburg Central 27 – The Prexies led 41-19 at the half and extended their advantage to 42 points after three quarters for an easy Section 5-AA road victory.
Washington remains undefeated in section action at 11-0, improving to 18-3 overall. The Raiders go to 2-9 in the section and 6-15 overall.
The Prexies had 13 different players score with Jok Wells leading the way with 19 points. Jordan Floyd scored 18 and Tom Kelly added 10.
Dominic Denicola led Waynesburg with 13 points.
High school wrestling
Burrell 48, West Greene 14 – The top-rated Bucs lived up to their billing, toppling the Pioneers out of the WPIAL Class AA team playoffs in the quarterfinal round.
The match began at 135 pounds and West Greene (10-7) got on the board in the second bout when Kory Bissett won a 5-2 decision over Devan Maloney at 140 pounds. The Pioneers stayed close with Tucker Conklin taking a 5-3 decision at 152 pounds, and Patrick Morris’ 7-2 decision at 171 pounds made the score 18-6 in favor of Burrell.
The Pioneers would only win one bout from that point, though, with Garett Johnston winning a 15-0 technical fall over Trevor Welsh at 125 pounds.
