AG girls drop non-league contest to Seneca Valley, 64-24 The Lady Colonials trailed by only two after the first quarter, but visiting Albert Gallatin would get no closer Saturday afternoon in a 64-24 non-section loss at Seneca Valley.
Seneca Valley led 27-16 at the half, and pulled away for a 49-21 advantage after three quarters.
Marquis Demniak led Albert Gallatin (2-20) with eight points.
Kelsey Spencer scored a game-high 16 points for Seneca Valley (13-10), with Megan Gedrosky finishing with 14, Jackie Mangola chipping in 13 and Amanda Johnson adding 11.
Men’s basketball
Waynesburg 52, Thiel 61 – The Yellow Jackets built a 17-point lead at halftime, and the visitors made it stand in the second half for a Presidents’ Athletic Conference road victory.
Waynesburg improves to 3-6 in the conference and 10-10 overall. The Tomcats fall to 2-7 in the PAC and 5-15 overall.
Waynesburg’s Josh Parisi made 10-of-13 foul shots while Beau Wilson made 6-of-8 to share team-scoring honors with 16 points apiece.
Marc Lodovico hit 3-of-4 3-pointers for 13 points with Ryan Courneen adding 12 points off the bench.
Joe Herrmann finished with a double-double for Thiel with 19 points and 16 rebounds. Cory Chafee scored a game-high 20 points for the Tomcats.
Women’s basketball
Thiel 76, Waynesburg 67 – The visiting Yellow Jackets trailed by four at the half and the Lady Tomcats wouldn’t allow Waynesburg to rally in the final 20 minutes for a Presidents’ Athletic Conference home victory.
Waynesburg slips to 3-6 in the PAC and 8-12 overall. Thiel improves to 3-6 in the conference and 8-12 overall.
The Yellow Jackets’ Katie Lewandowski made 3-of-5 3-point attempts and 10-of-13 free throw attempts to finish with 27 points. Jenna Pratte was also in double digits with 11 points while Michaelene Jones was strong on the boards with 12 rebounds.
Amber Bodrick scored a game-high 31 points for the Lady Tomcats before fouling out. Nicole Valentino added 17.
College wrestling
John Summa Tournament – Nikkien Fauntleroy won the 133-pound bracket for Waynesburg as the Yellow Jackets finished ninth out of 10 teams at the tournament hosted by Baldwin-Wallace.
Seeded third in his weight class, Fauntleroy opened with a pin before winning an 11-4 decision in the quarterfinals. He defeated Baldwin-Wallace’s Brian Bucher by a 15-6 major decision in the semifinals and capped the tournament with a 5-2 decision over Baldwin-Wallace’s Jared Selover.
Brandon Miller opened with a fall at 197 pounds. Connellsville’s Melvin Warrick followed an opening-round loss with a pair of victories in the heavyweight bracket.
Mike Catalano (157) and Rich Janicki (heavyweight) both recorded one victory in the tournament.
College track & field
University of Akron Invitational – The Vulcans’ Chris Clark broke the school record and provisionally qualified for the NCAA Indoor Nationals by finishing second in the 5,000-meter run at the University of Akron.
Clark now owns the record at 5,000 meters at California (Pa.) after covering the distance in 14:26.71. The junior’s time is the second fastest in Division II this season.
Charles Kacsur established a school record in the 800 by finishing third in a time of 1:56.68, edging Connellsville grad Ken King’s time of 1:56.72. Bradley Rager was eighth in the 400 with a time of 49.13 seconds.
Women’s tennis
California (Pa.) 9, Denison 0 – The Vulcans, the No. 8 team in Division II, opened the spring season with a shutout victory at Denison, the 16th-ranked team in Division III.
Inga Chilingaryan, Lisa Santoro, Yumi Matsuto, Helena Eysendeyk, Nina Reiswich and Olga Alekseeva all won their singles matches in straight sets.
The tandems of Chilingaryan/Matsuto, Santoro/Eysendeyk and Reiswich/Alekseeva dropped just eight games to sweep the doubles.
