Young stars lead Cal women past Golden Eagles
CALIFORNIA – Freshman Brooque Williams had her second double-double of the week and sophomore Lindsay Johnson scored a career-high 23 points to lead California University of Pennsylvania to a 67-61 PSAC West win over Clarion Saturday. Williams, a Perry Traditional Academy graduate, scored 11 points and added 10 rebounds for the Vulcans (14-7, 4-3).
Clarion (7-14, 2-5) lost despite Katrina Greer’s 16 points. One of Clarion’s wins was over Cal earlier this season.
The Vulcans played their second game without junior Kim Nowakowski and were coming off a 77-59 loss at Edinboro.
“I’m really proud of them because they gave me a really good effort without our best player,” California coach Darcie Vincent said. “We took a gamble by starting a player (Amanda Evans) who is new to the game.”
A star player for Cal’s volleyball team, Evans responded to her first start with six points, four rebounds and two blocked shots in 19 minutes.
“I like her game, but she’s not been around long enough to understand defensive schemes,” Vincent said of Evans. “But she made some plays for us.”
Included in those plays were back-to-back baskets to put Cal ahead for good at 52-49, then blocked a shot that led to another Cal basket.
“Our guards in general played much better today and I’m proud of them for that,” Vincent said. “When we lost at Clarion, our guards did not play well. I’m really pleased with how Brooque has been playing lately. She started the season kind of on the fence, as a lot of freshmen do. She wasn’t sure if she was going to be a player here or fade away, but she has committed herself to playing and it is showing in her play.”
The Vulcans travel to Pitt-Johnstown Wednesday, but Vincent said she will hold out Nowakowski until Saturday’s game at Lock Haven.
