Mapletown girls set down West Greene, 52-47 The Mapletown girls moved one step closer to securing second place in Section 2-A Tuesday with a 52-47 victory at West Greene.
The Lady Maples improve to 6-3 in the section and 13-7 overall while the Lady Pioneers fall to 1-8 in the section and 1-21 overall.
Mapletown pushed out to an 8-2 lead after the first quarter, but West Greene played the visitors pretty even in the second with the Lady Maples holding a 19-17 edge for a 27-19 lead at the break.
The Lady Maples extended their lead to 13 points after 24 minutes, a good thing considering West Greene put together a rally in the fourth, 19-11, for the final difference.
Bethany Ross led the Lady Maples with 18 while Erika Chory added 14.
Chelsey Jones scored a team-high 13 points for West Greene with Angela Devenney adding 12.
Boys basketball
Serra Catholic 81, Frazier 37 – The Eagles remained undefeated in Section 3-A with a convincing victory over the visiting Commodores. Serra is now 9-0 in the section and 19-2 overall. Frazier still has a tenuous hold on a playoff berth, slipping to 3-6 in the section and 10-12 overall.
Greg Johnson had a double-double for the Commodores with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Teammate Jim Traynor was also in double figures with 10 points.
A quartet of players scored in double digits for the Eagles with Anthony Epolito leading the way with 18. Marc Rozanski finished with 16, Jonathan Staso had 14 and Pat Grubbs added 10.
