Lady Gators hammer Carmichaels, 77-36 Four Geibel Catholic players scored in double digits highlighted by sophomore guard Julianne Speeney’s 12 en route to an easy 77-36 Section 2-A girls basketball win over visiting Carmichaels.
Natalie Hozak was next in the scoring column with 11 points, while Mia White and Sabrina Szabo added 10 each. White posted a team-high seven assists, as did teammate Sara Erdely, who also added nine points.
Szabo pulled down eight rebounds.
Carmichaels senior center Megan Stuvek led all scorers with 19 points, including 3-of-4 from the foul line.
The Lady Gators led by five at the half and then went on a 32-point third-quarter burst, compared to Carmichaels’ 14 points.
Both Geibel and Carmichaels await the pairings meeting Tuesday to find out who they’ll face in the playoffs.
Ringgold 39, Uniontown 30 – Bethany Warren scored a game-high 13 points and Jennie Affinto added 12 as Ringgold downed visiting Uniontown in a non-section contest.
The Lady Red Raiders held a one-point lead after the first quarter, but the Lady Rams battled back in the second and third periods for the win.
Lawren Davis led Uniontown with 10 points, including one from beyond the three-point arc.
Sherika Brown was next with eight points, four of which from the foul line.
Uniontown finishes its season at 9-14 in the section and 4-10 overall.
Men’s basketball
Lock Haven 61, California (Pa) 59 – James Chappell’s 8-foot baseline jumper with 3.2 seconds remaining lifted Lock Haven (10-13, 4-5 PSAC West) to a 61-59 PSAC West men’s basketball victory over California (18-5, 6-2 PSAC West) Saturday.
Cal senior guard James Petty threw down 20 points while senior forward Osborne Gardner added nine scores and seven rebounds to lead the Vulcans, who entered the game ranked No. 2 in the NCAA Division II East Region.
Cal took charge of the game by outscoring the hosts 20-4 over the final nine minutes of the first half for a 33-17 advantage. Petty led all scorers with 15 points in the opening frame, hitting 6-for-11 from the field, including a pair of three-point goals.
Despite the loss, Cal retained its half-game lead in the PSAC West because second-place Shippensburg was upended in overtime at Clarion, 64-63. Edinboro moved into a tie for second place with Shippensburg by defeating Indiana, Pa., 76-46.
The Vulcans will play at Shippensburg Wednesday (2/14) at 8 p.m.
Westminster 84, Waynesburg 82 – Senior swingman Dom Joseph netted a game-high 19 points and sophomore forward Ryan Ricketts hit the game-winning field goal with six seconds left in overtime, as Westminster prevailed over Waynesburg, 84-82, on Saturday in Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) action.
The Yellow Jackets, which shot 46.3 percent in the game, was led by 18 points each from seniors Beau Wilson
and Jeff Nero.
Wilson hit five treys on eight attempts and Nero collected eight rebounds.
Senior guard Marc Lodovico
tallied 17 points to become the 31st player in program history to score 1,000 career points (1,012). Junior forward Josh Parisi
added 13 points and eight boards.
Waynesburg is now 10-12 overall and 3-8 in the conference. The Titans hit 43.9 percent of their shots in the game and move to 16-7 overall and 8-2 in the PAC race.
The score was knotted 77-77 at the end of regulation for the ninth tie of the game.
Waynesburg held a narrow 43-42 edge in the rebounding category and both teams scored 30 points from in the paint. For the game, the Yellow Jackets had 17 turnovers to the Titans’ 13 with Westminster holding a 19-10 advantage in points off turnovers.
Westminster shot 14-of-25 from the foul line, while Waynesburg was 11-for-17, including seven-of-nine in the second half.
The Yellow Jackets return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 14, when they host Thomas More in a 7:30 p.m. game. Thomas More is 3-20 overall and 3-7 in the league after defeating Thiel, 71-64, on Saturday afternoon.
Women’s basketball
California (Pa.) 68, Lock Haven 55 – California sophomore guard Bre Dillon poured in a game and career-high 24 points and added five rebounds, three assists and two steals to lead the Vulcans (16-7, 5-3 PSAC West) to a 68-55 PSAC West women’s basketball victory at Lock Haven (11-12, 4-5 PSAC West) Saturday.
Sophomore guard Lindsay Johnson added 13 points and six rebounds, senior guard Dani Mills chipped in 11 points, three assists and two steals and senior forward April Smith added nine points and nine rebounds for the Vulcans.
Cal, ranked No. 10 in the Division II East Region, won its third-straight game and 15th-straight over the last eight years vs. the Bald Eagles.
The Vulcans remained in second place in the PSAC West.
The Vulcans finished the half with a 38-22 lead. Johnson and Dillon each had 11 points at the break.
The Vulcan defense held LHU to a 29.6 shooting performance (16-for-54). Cal also held a 46-35 advantage on the glass.
Cal will complete its three-game road trip Wednesday with a PSAC West battle at Shippensburg (6 p.m.).
Westminster 60, Waynesburg 43 – Senior guard Desiree Sterling tallied a game-high 25, including six-of-eight from three-point territory, to lead Westminster past Waynesburg, 60-43, on Saturday afternoon. Westminster (18-5, 8-2 PAC) won for the ninth time in its last 10 games to remain in a three-way tie for the conference lead. On the contrary, Waynesburg (8-13, 3-8 PAC) dropped its eighth contest in its last 10 games and sits in sixth place in the league standings.
In a match-up of two all-conference backcourt players, Sterling bested Waynesburg senior guard Katie Lewandowski
. Lewandowski had six points, three assists and two rebounds in 32 minutes, while Sterling had six boards and four assists, along with her 25 points.
The closest the Yellow Jackets would get in the final nine minutes of the game was at 49-40 with 8:33 after a three-pointer by Lewandowski.
Senior forward Denise Kennedy
led Waynesburg with nine points, Waynesburg Central graduate Jeanette Wonsettler
added eight points off the bench. Kennedy and three other Yellow Jackets collected five rebounds as the two teams each registered 35 rebounds in the contest.
Waynesburg finishes the season with a pair of home games next week beginning with a conference match-up with Thomas More on Wednesday, Feb. 14. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at the Marisa Fieldhouse.
Saint Vincent 84, Grove City 63 – Laura Klimchock scored a game-high 33 points and teammate Janelle Reed added 24 as Saint Vincent upended Grove City.
Albert Gallatin graduate Rachel Karpency scored two points, pulled down four rebounds, had two assists and a steal in 13 minutes of play.
Connellsville grad Ashley Benzio scored two points, two rebounds and a steal in the win.
Track & field
Waynesburg College freshman and Waynesburg Central graduate Jake Raddish
won the high jump and senior Eric Daniels
placed second in the 55-meter dash to lead the Waynesburg track & field teams in an indoor track meet hosted by Baldwin-Wallace at Harrison Dillard Track in the Lou Higgins Center Fieldhouse on Friday evening. The unscored indoor track meet featured a total of 10 programs competing (nine men, 10 women).
Raddish won the high jump competition – his first collegiate jump – with a height of 6-00.75 (1.85 meters). Geibel Catholic graduate Nick Staffieri
gave the Yellow Jackets a 1-2 finish in the event after clearing 5-10.75 (1.80 meters).
Daniels took second in the 55-meter dash in 6.74 seconds after leading all advancers in the preliminary race with a time of 6.76.
Senior Alex Cairns
took fifth place in the triple jump with a leap of 11.61 in the finals.
Distance runners paced the women’s race for Waynesburg. Freshman Janet Carson
finished fifth in the 5000-meter race, rounding the track in 20:27.34. Junior Michelle Propst
completed the 1-mile run race 5:43.21 to place sixth in a 21-runner field.
The Yellow Jacket track teams open their outdoor season on Saturday, March 24, when Waynesburg competes in the Clarion Early Bird Invitational with events scheduled to start at 10 a.m.
