Class AA Wrestling
Section tourney slated for Saturday Without the hubbub of the basketball playoff pairings, the wrestling sectional tournaments begin Saturday with the three Class AA sections opening the individual quest for WPIAL, regional and PIAA titles.
The top four wrestlers in each of the 14 weight classifications from the three sectional sites advance to the WPIAL Class AA Championships at Charleroi High School on Friday-Saturday, Feb. 23-24. The top six finishers in the district championship then advance to the Southwest Regional with the top five wrestlers earning a berth into the PIAA Championships.
Chartiers-Houston High School hosts the Class 1-AA tournament with several West Greene grapplers earning top seeds.
The Pioneers’ Colton Blumer (112), Garrett Johnston (125), Tucker Conklin (152), and Patrick Morris (171) are all top-seeded. Kevin Courtwright (130) and Kory Bissett (140) earned a No. 2 seeds.
Bissett is the defending Class AA champion at 135 pounds.
Mount Pleasant is the host site for the Class 2-AA tournament and several local wrestlers are among the top four seeds.
Jefferson-Morgan’s Brian Scritchfield (103) and Ty Basinger (130), Mount Pleasant’s Zack Sheridan (125), Nic Harr (189), and Stefan Firmstone (215), and Southmoreland’s Erik Frund (160) are No. 1 seeds.
The Vikings’ Larry Pospisil (140) and Paul Snyder (285), the Bulldogs’ Chris Stay (152) and Aaron Hrutkay (160), and the Rockets’ Ethan Virgili (189) all grabbed second seeds.
Snyder was the Class AA champion at heavyweight in 2006.
Southmoreland’s Scott Wildey (103) and Jeff Beal (152), Jefferson-Morgan’s Brad Phillips (119), Mount Pleasant’s Brandon Vasinko (135), and Beth-Center’s George Cramer (140) and Drew Markovich (145) are seeded third.
Jefferson-Morgan’s James Miller (112) and Zach Doman (285), Beth-Center’s Dominic Moore (135), the Scotties’ Andrew Henkel (140), and Mount Pleasant’s Tim Hough (160) are seeded fourth.
