Megan Stuvek surpasses scoring, rebounding milestones As the shots keep dropping, Megan Stuvek’s numbers keep rising.
Carmichaels’ all-time leading scorer tossed in 21 points and pulled down 16 rebounds Tuesday night as the Lady Mikes defeated visiting Frazier, 57-45, in non-section action.
Registering game highs in both points and rebounds, Stuvek surpassed the career 1,500-point plateau and also went beyond 1,200 rebounds.
“I thought it was odd it happened on the same night,” said Carmichaels coach Jim Lane. “She’s already the all-time leading scorer and rebounder at Carmichaels, so she is just adding to those numbers.”
Stuvek hit seven shots from the field and was 7 of 8 at the free throw line as Carmichaels improved to 6-8.
Courtney Newland added 14 points, while Jordan Duke chipped in 11.
For Frazier (6-8), Kristen Joseph scored 16 points and Meghan Leary added 14.
Boys Basketball
Ringgold 70, Belle Vernon 61 – A trio of Ringgold players eclipsed the double-digit plateau with R.J. Brownlee leading the way with 20 points as they defeated visiting Belle Vernon in a Section 3-AAA clash.
Simon Bekavac was next in the scoring column with 13 points, including 3-of-4 from the foul line and teammate Dave Bassi scored 12.
The Rams had 24 field goals and was 10-of-16 from the charity stripe.
Belle Vernon’s Jacob Dudzinski led all scorers with 16 points.
Teammates Jake Cramer and Tyler Shutterly added 14 and 12 points respectively.
Cramer and Shutterly both tossed in two from beyond the three-point arc.
The Leopards (2-6, 4-10) look to rebound today against Frazier.
Chartiers-Houston 43, Waynesburg Central 35 – Jordan Cypher and Max Reddout each tossed in 12 points as Chartiers-Houston downed Waynesburg Central in a Section 5-AA contest.
Cypher went a perfect 4-of-4 from the foul line and Reddout went 2-for-2.
As a team, the Bucks went 13-for-20 from the charity stripe.
Teammate John Popeck also scored in double figures with 10 points, including a trey and 3-of-4 from the foul line.
The Raiders led 11-7 after the first quarter, but Chartiers edged its way back into the game in the final three periods.
Waynesburg’s Kenny Blackwell led all scorers with 22 points, including two from beyond the three-point arc.
The Raiders (4-11) look to put one in the win column Friday against Beth-Center.
Clairton 90, Frazier 65 – It was a rough day at the office for the Frazier boys basketball team as the Commodores dropped one to host Clairton in a Section 3-A outing.
Greg Johnson led Frazier with 14 points, including a three-point goal, while teammate Jim Traynor added 13 with two from three-point land.
The Commodores (7-5) hope to bounce back today at home against Belle Vernon, who is coming off a 70-61 loss to Ringgold.
Brownsville 70, Beth-Center 46 – Three Brownsville players scored in double digits, highlighted by Dimetrius Williams’ 22 points, as Brownsville downed visiting Beth-Center in a Section 5-AA showdown.
Williams put on a three-point clinic draining five from beyond the arc.
Teammate Terrance McCoy scored 20 points, including 8-of-9 from the foul line and Andrew Roberts scored 17.
Beth-Center held a one-point first-quarter lead, then the Falcons took over in the final three periods, including 46 points in the second half, compared to B-C’s 28.
Ryan Niemiec led the Bulldogs with 20 points, which included a three-pointer and 5-of-5 from the charity stripe.
Junior guard Matt Stotka added 12 points.
The Falcons (4-10, 1-5) are back in action at Monessen Friday.
California 64, Carmichaels 45 – Mike Hrivnak poured in 20 points, including four three-pointers as California blew past Carmichaels in Section 2-A action.
Teammate John McVicker was right behind Hrivnak in the scoring with 19 points, nine of which came from three-point land.
Chris McVicker also scored double digits with 16 points, two three-point goals and a perfect 2-of-2 performance from the foul line.
Jeremy Ganocy led Carmichaels with 20 points on eight field goals and 1-of-2 from the line.
California (11-2) hosts Mapletown Friday, while Carmichaels (5-7) plays Jefferson-Morgan.
Jefferson-Morgan 57, West Greene 45 – Ben Humble led Jefferson-Morgan with 15 points, including 5-of-8 from the foul line as they defeated host West Greene in Section 2-A contest.
J.W. Popielarcheck poured in 14 points, including 3-of-3 from the stripe and Jarrod Moskola added 10 with 4-of-4 from the line.
The Rockets scored on 20 field goals and a 16-of-20 outing from the foul line.
Josh Cooke led West Greene with 14 points and teammate Aaron Gifford added 11.
Jefferson-Morgan (3-11, 1-1) plays Carmichaels Friday and West Greene falls to 1-11 overall and 0-2 in the section.
Turkeyfoot Valley 60, Shade 56 – A trio of Turkeyfoot Valley players scored in double figures with Nathan Glass leading the way with 17 points as they edged past Shade in West Pac action.
Bill Chatman scored 15 points and Tim Waas added 14 for the Rams.
Turkeyfoot scored on 25 field goals and 9-of-12 from the foul line.
In Monday’s game, Turkeyfoot defeated Union 66-57.
Meyersdale is next up on the Rams’ schedule Thursday.
Wrestling
West Greene 42, Avella 29 – West Greene extended its record to 7-4 with a Section 1-AA win over host Avella.
At 119, Dakota Riffle pinned Ethan Driestandt in 1:09 followed by a decision win (5-1) for Garrett Johnson over Mitch Spencer at 125.
Kevin Courtright won a 5-1 decision over Aaron Nargaria at 130 and teammate Matt Longstreth claimed a 15-4 major decision win over Travis Stoneking at 135.
After two Avella wins at 140 and 145, West Greene’s Tucker Conklin pinned John Clark in 1:21 at the 152 class.
Danny Herrington pinned Nathan Rush in 2:47 at 215 class.
Colton Bloomer (112), Patrick Morris (171) and Keith Watson (160) each won by forfeit over Avella.
The Pioneers (7-4) square off against Freedom today at 7:30 p.m.
Girls swimming
Uniontown 48, East Allegheny 25 – The team of Breanne Gellar, Jess Dzara, Katie Patek and Corrina Engle kicked things off for the Uniontown girls swim team with a first-place finish in the 200 medley relay with a time of 2:10.25, as they rolled to an easy non-section win over visiting East Allegheny.
Kaitlyn Johnson took home gold in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:05.44 followed by Rebecca Smith’s win in the 200 IM (2:37.92) and Josie Squib’s victory in the diving (109).
The Lady Red Raiders (5-1) open Section 3-AAA action Thursday when they host Canon-McMillan.
Boys swimming
Uniontown 74, East Allegheny 48 – Keanu Glisan took home first-place finishes in the 50 freestyle (27.14), the 100 freestyle (1:06.25) and two winning relay teams as Uniontown upended East Allegheny in non-section action.
The team of Emanuel Brosky, Dan Rush, Brodie Kelley and Glisan won gold in the 200 medley relay in 2:12.61.
Glisan teamed with Allen Zieglar, Kelley and Chris Quinn for a win in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:54.95.
Individually, Kelley won the 500 freestyle in 6:42) and Dillon Gearing won the 200 IM in 3:19.44.
Uniontown’s Dan Rush won the diving with a score of 116.
The 2-6 Red Raiders square off against Canon-McMillan Thursday for the Section 3-AAA opener.
