Mitchell gets fall in final bout to lift AG to victory The match couldn’t have laid out better for Albert Gallatin.

The Colonials trailed Greensburg Salem, 32-28, with one bout to go in a battle with one of the four teams to enter Wednesday’s action undefeated in Section 2-AAA.

Albert Gallatin’s Dave Mitchell was up to the challenge in his 215-pound bout with Amedeo Defazio, winning by fall to secure a 34-32 victory and a share of first place with Hempfield, a 44-16 winner at Connellsville.

Jeremiah Karpency got things going for the Colonials (4-0, 12-3) with a 6-1 decision at 285 pounds. Lee Leckemby won by forfeit at 103 pounds, but the Golden Lions (4-1) rallied with a vengeance by winning the next seven bouts for a 32-point run.

Jeff Dulaney turned things around for Albert Gallatin with a fall at 152 pounds, and then Tom Gates won a 12-9 decision at 160. Lance Bryson’s pin at 171 pounds drew the Colonials closer with Kevin Bella’s major decision at 189 putting the victory in Mitchell’s reach.

Uniontown 42, McKeesport 30 – The Red Raiders had a good run from 152 through 189 pounds, good enough to come away with a Section 2-AAA home victory over the visiting Tigers.

Tyler Holt started the mini-run with a fall at 152 pounds at 4:59, and Clint Payton followed in kind with a pin in 52 seconds at 160. Bobby Holt won an 8-4 decision at 171 pounds and Jason King needed overtime for a 5-4 decision at 189.

Uniontown’s winning effort was bolstered with forfeit wins by Ken Seliga (103), Derek Branguard (119), Zach Bigham (130) and Sebastian Davanzo (135).

Uniontown (1-4, 2-6) will wrestle in the Fort Hill (Md.) Duals this weekend.

West Greene 56, Freedom 13 – The visiting Bulldogs just didn’t have enough as the Pioneers won 10 of 13 contested matches for a Section 1-AA victory.

West Greene’s Dakota Riffle (119), Garrett Johnston (125), Josh Durbin (145), Tucker Conklin (152) and Chris Horr (189) all won by fall. The Pioneers’ Colton Blumer recorded a 17-1 technical fall at 119 pounds. Danny Herrington (215), Patrick Morris (171) and Eli Blake (140) won by forfeit. Kevin Courtwright won a 6-0 decision at 130 pounds.

There was no match contested at 103 pounds.

Women’s basketball

Clarion 69, California (Pa.) 58 – The last time California (Pa.) lost a PSAC-West game was on Jan. 29, 2005, when the Vulcans lost on the road to Clarion, 71-59.

Fast forward nearly two years later, and history repeated itself when the Golden Eagles snapped California’s 23-game PSAC West win streak with a home victory despite Kim Nowakowski’s 10th double-double of the season for the Vulcans.

A 15-4 run in the first half put the Vulcans ahead, 21-10, but Clarion responded in kind with a 9-0 run late in the half for a 29-27 lead. California scored the first five points of the second half and the game seesawed until a 7-point run late in the game ran Clarion’s lead to 10 points and the Golden Eagles held on for the win.

Nowakowski scored a game-high 24 points for California (0-1, 9-4) to go with 11 rebounds. Her point total moved her to 17th on California’s all-time scoring list with 1,024 points.

Bre Dillon added nine points while April Smith grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.

Katrina Greer led Clarion (1-0, 5-8) with 18 points. April Gratton added 17 and Ashley Grimm finished with 14.

California looks to get back on the winning track this weekend with PSAC crossover games at East Stroudsburg on Saturday and Kutztown on Sunday.

Washington & Jefferson 64, Waynesburg 50 – The Presidents rank their streak to 19 consecutive wins over the Yellow Jackets behind Kaleigh Bangor’s 13 points. W&J built a 40-27 lead at the half, and cruised home from there.

Denise Kennedy led Waynesburg with 13 points and six rebounds.

Men’s basketball

Washington & Jefferson 77, Waynesburg 64 – The Presidents’ Brandon Studer made six 3-pointers on his way to a career-high 28 points to lead W&J to victory over visiting Waynesburg in Presidents’ Athletic Conference action.

Studer was the key early for W&J (1-1, 4-10), spurring a 20-6 run in the first half to give the Presidents a 24-11 lead at 11:57 of the first half. The Yellow Jackets responded with a 10-0 run, but that was answered by the home team with a 14-2 flurry in the waning minutes of the first half.

Waynesburg closed to within eight points with five minutes expired in the second half, but a 14-7 run by W&J was too much for the Yellow Jackets to overcome.

Jon Koch moved into second on the Presidents’ all-time scoring list after his 20 points pushed his career total to 1,569.

Beau Wilson hit five 3-pointers to lead Waynesburg with 21 points.

Girls basketball

Steel Valley 50, Brownsville 39 – The Lady Falcons trailed by seven at the half, but the Lady Ironmen doubled their lead with a 15-8 third quarter and went on for a non-section road victory.

Trailing by 14 after three quarters, Brownsville (8-6) made a small run in the final quarter, outscoring Steel Valley, 11-8.

Emily Lucoch led Brownsville with 12 points while teammate Stacey Knox was also in double figures with 11.

Britteny Dunmire hit four 3-pointers for Steel Valley (5-10) on her way to a game-high 20 points.

Brownsville is off until next Wednesday when the Lady Falcons host Clairton.
