Dilworth’s double-double sparks Falcons Connellsville rallied from a 9-point deficit to a 29-28 halftime advantage, a lead the Falcons would hold throughout the second half Friday for a 70-64 Section 1-AAAA victory over visiting Penn-Trafford.
Connellsville (2-6, 4-12) managed to maintain its lead with a 21-17 third quarter and a slim 20-19 advantage in the final eight minutes.
Johnny Dilworth’s double-double of 17 points and 19 rebounds led the attack for the Falcons. The backcourt of Mason Leos and Lance Straughters combined for 26 points with Rob Egan also in double figures with 10 points.
Penn Trafford (0-8, 4-13) only had five players score, but the entire quintet was in double figures. Justin Edwards scored a team-high 17 points. Mike Brown finished with 14, Dan Dininno scored 12, Jordan Cunningham had 11 and Bob Westerland added 10.
Charleroi 60, Brownsville 58 – The Cougars scored just enough points in the middle two quarters to squeak out a Section 5-AA victory at home. Charleroi outscored the Falcons in the second and third quarters by a 33-25 count with Brownsville winning the other two quarters, 33-27.
John Bristol led Charleroi (4-4, 9-7) with 14 points. Jermaine Thurston scored 13 and Taylor Andrisko added 11.
Terrance McCoy and Andrew Roberts accounted for 43 of the Falcons’ 58 points with McCoy scoring a game-high 23 points while Roberts adding 20.
Brownsville slips to 1-7 in the section and 4-13 overall.
Avella 64, Frazier 61, OT – The Commodores forced overtime, but the Rams’ Nate Klem was too much to handle in the extra period as he scored six of Avella’s eight points for a thrilling Section 3-A home victory.
Klem hit a field goal and made 4-of-5 free throws to carry the Rams.
The game was close throughout with Frazier leading by two after the first quarter, one at the half, and trailing by one after three quarters.
Jim Traynor led Frazier (2-3, 8-8) with 20 points. Greg Johnson added 19.
Shea Georgetti scored a game-high 22 points for the Rams (2-3, 9-9). Klem finished with 15 and Lee Thieroff added 10.
Burgettstown 86, Waynesburg Central 43 – The game was through the first half, but the visiting Blue Devils widened the gap to 22 points after the third quarter to cruise to an easy Section 5-AA home victory.
Four players were in double figures for Burgettstown (5-3, 11-6) with Justin Lonchar leading the way with 17 points.
D.J. Smith scored 15, Bryan Pavan finished with 12 and Derek Goetz added 11.
Southmoreland 63, Derry 49 – Bill Geyer scored a game-high 23 points, including 13-of-16 from the foul line, to help the Scots to a home Section 3-AAA victory.
Southmoreland (3-7, 8-9) led 30-21 at the half, and Derry managed to knock a point off its deficit after three quarters before the Scots finished off the win with a 20-14 fourth quarter.
Andrew Sikora and Matt Lochinger both scored 10 for the Scots.
Mapletown 47, Jefferson-Morgan 44 – The Rockets led 13-12 after the first quarter and 30-29 after three quarters, but the Maples rallied for an 18-14 fourth quarter to win a Section 2-A game on the road.
Ethan Kovach led Mapletown (2-3, 4-13) with 17 points, including 7-of-11 from the foul line.
Ryan Wilson was also in double figures with 14.
Mike Mox led the Rockets (1-4, 3-15) with 10 points.
Yough 56, Belle Vernon 43 – The Cougars outscored the visiting Leopards in each of the four quarters for a 13-point Section 3-AAA home victory.
Both teams made nine field goals and four 3-pointers, but Yough held a decided advantage at the foul line, making 26-of-40 to Belle Vernon’s 13-of-25. All 14 of Yough’s points in the fourth quarter came from the foul line as four Leopards fouled out with another finishing the game with four fouls.
Two Cougars fouled out.
Ben Hoffer led Yough (7-4, 11-6) with 19 points, going 12-of-14 from the foul line. Andrew McCauley went 9-of-11 from the line to finish with 17 points while Adam Mutvya scored 11.
Jacob Dudzinski led the Leopards (2-9, 6-13) with 17 points. Brian Layhue was also in double figures with 10.
In other boys basketball action, Carmichaels was on the road at West Greene and the Mikes returned home with a 53-29 victory.
Carmichaels improves to 3-2 in Section 2-A and 7-8 overall, while the Pioneers fall to 0-5 in the section and 1-13 overall. Beth-Center had some road woes, though, dropping a Section 5-AA game at Monessen, 102-64. Beth-Center falls to 0-8 in the section and 4-12 overall with the Greyhounds improving to 7-1 in the section and 12-4 overall.
Girls basketball
Chartiers-Valley 70, Waynesburg Central 18 – Paige Aleski tossed in a game-high 15 points to lead the Lady Colts past the Lady Raiders in 4-AAA action.
Mary Rodavich added 13 points, while Erica Restich chipped in 10 for the winners.
Miatta Toothman paced Waynesburg (0-18, 0-9) with 12 points.
