Olson leads Lady Rockets to victory Jefferson-Morgan outscored visiting Avella in the first and third quarters, and the difference was just enough Saturday for a 45-40 non-section victory over the Lady Eagles.
The Lady Rockets (9-7) led 9-6 after the first quarter and 17-15 at the half. They extended their lead to 31-25 after 24 minutes of action. Jefferson-Morgan made 20-of-45 free throw attempts, while Avella made 12-of-21.
Lindsay Olson went 9-of-13 from the foul line to score a game-high 16 points for Jefferson-Morgan. Maddie Snyder and Rachel Weaver both scored 10.
In a non-section road game, Uniontown dropped a 72-31 decision at Butler. The Lady Raiders fall to 6-9 overall.
Boys basketball
Albert Gallatin 52, South Allegheny 34 – Albert Gallatin pushed out to a 27-12 lead at halftime, and never looked back for a non-section home victory over the Gladiators. The Colonials improve to 12-5 overall while South Allegheny falls to 6-11.
Albert Gallatin spread the points around with Jawaan Alston leading the way with 17 points. Marc Marshall scored eight with Nate Turner, Ricky Knox and Jake Magerko all finishing with seven.
Anthony Hustkow hit three 3-pointers to score a team-high 12 points for the Gladiators.
College wrestling
Mercyhurst North East 34, Waynesburg 15; Muskingum 35, Waynesburg 7 – The host Yellow Jackets didn’t fare well in their annual dual match, dropping a pair of matches despite strong personal performances by Nikkien Fauntleroy and Nick Dlugonski.
Fauntleroy, wrestling in his first collegiate match, won by fall when he put Mercyhurst North East’s James Henderson on his back in the 133-pound bout. He ran his career record to 2-0 with an 11-5 decision over Muskingum’s David Rivera.
Dlugonski also went 2-0 for the day at 184 pounds, winning by forfeit against Mercyhurst North East and taking a 12-4 major decision over Muskingum’s Cody Hopper.
Brandon Miller, a freshman, had the only other victory for the Yellow Jackets in the two matches with an 8-3 overtime decision over Mercyhurst North East’s Ron Dombkowski.
Mercyhurst North East went 2-0 on the afternoon, defeating Muskingum, 31-18.
Waynesburg returns to action Saturday, Feb. 3, when the Yellow Jackets compete in the 21st annual John Summa Memorial Tournament hosted by Baldwin-Wallace.
Men’s basketball
Penn State-DuBois 78, Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus 56 – The Roaring Lions played Penn State-DuBois even in the second half, but wasn’t able to overcome a 43-21 halftime deficit for a PSUAC loss.
Pat Brown led Penn State-DuBois (5-2, 8-5) with 15 points. Teammate Kyle Vogt added 12.
Jordan Alderson was the top scorer for the Roaring Lions (0-9, 0-17) with 15 points.
Women’s basketball
Saint Vincent 70, Waynesburg 48 – The Lady Bearcats built a 21-point halftime lead, and then cruised home to victory over the visiting Yellow Jackets. Saint Vincent is a probationary member of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference so the loss won’t affect the conference standings.
Laura Klimchock scored a game-high 26 points for Saint Vincent (5-9) while Janelle Reed finished with a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Caryn Glassbrenner added 10 points from the bench.
Connellsville grad Ashley Benzio grabbed four defensive rebounds and blocked two shots, while Albert Gallatin’s Rachel Karpency had an assist, block and steal in a reserve role
Denise Kennedy was the lone player for Waynesburg (7-9) in double figures with 14 points. Brownsville’s Amanda Mitchell grabbed a defensive rebound in a reserve role while Waynesburg Central grad Jeanette Wonsettler went 2-of-3 from the foul line and pulled down four defensive rebounds.
Women’s swimming
California (Pa.) 67, Lock Haven 53; California (Pa.) 74, Lock Haven 46 – April Staniszewski and Delfina Chandra both set individual pool records to lead the Vulcans to a pair of victories at Hamer Hall. California improves to 4-0 overall.
Staniszewski established her mark in the 1,650-meter freestyle with a time of 18:48.23. Chandra won the 200-meter backstroke in a record time of 2:11.61.
The 400 freestyle relay team of Brittany Bureau, Rachel Kurta, Stine Hestdal and Miranda King also set a pool record of 3:432.29, although the event was exhibition because the Vulcans had already clinched the win.
The quartet also had individual wins with Hestdal finishing first in the 200 freestyle (2:01.54), Bureau winning the 200 butterfly (2:17.05), and King taking first in the 50 freestyle (24.76 seconds).
Other first place finishers for the Vulcans were Lea Mastascusa (100 backstroke, 1:03.13), Mandie Huffman (200 breaststroke, 2:32.20), and Jessica Lane (500 freestyle, 5:38.17).
