Uniontown breezes past Albert Gallatin

By Ed Kolencik 3 min read

Junior guard Lawren Davis and teammate Cherese Hodge eclipsed the double-digit mark with 15 points each, as Uniontown rolled past visiting Albert Gallatin, 59-34, in a Section 1-AAAA girls basketball showdown Monday. Davis opened the game with a three-pointer and Hodge tossed in eight quick points as the Lady Red Raiders jumped out to an early 20-8 first-quarter lead.

“I thought the girls came out with intensity throughout the whole game,” said Uniontown coach Jason Winfrey. “I’m proud of them because we took a bit of a thumping on Saturday and we wanted to refocus on where we wanted our program to go.”

Uniontown did just that as they held the Lady Colonials to 12 points in the first half.

Albert Gallatin freshman guard Mallory Sanner scored 11 points, nine of which came from beyond three-point land.

Jessica Lint led AG with 11 points, including a perfect 4-of-4 performance from the foul line and seven first-half points.

Teammate Megan Angelo was next in the scoring column with 10 points on four field goals and 2-of-4 from the line.

The strong man-to-man defense set the tone for Uniontown as it was all part of the master plan going into the game.

“We’re trying to establish our identity and we believe that man-to-man is our best defense,” said Winfrey. “We try and do different things and try to confuse the offense.”

Uniontown used its size advantage and made a strong effort to give Hodge more touches, as was evident in the third quarter when she converted on 5-of-6 from the foul line after Lady Colonial fouls.

Albert Gallatin totaled 17 fouls, compared to Uniontown’s 12.

Four of Albert Gallatin’s starting five (Angelo, Lint, Ashley Dupont and Marquis Demniak) each had three fouls.

Turnovers continue to plague the Lady Colonials as that continues to be a focal point for first-year coach Jeramiah Powell.

“My hats off to Uniontown. Their girls played hard and we didn’t play at all,” said Powell. “We’ve made a significant improvement the last few weeks. We’re still struggling with turnovers. Once we get away from these turnovers, we’ll be a fine team.”

From a statistical standpoint, AG scored on 22 field goals and went 9-for-18 from the foul line and AG scored on 11 points and shot 8-of-14 from the charity stripe.

“Our philosophy is to run a 2-3 zone to try and it’s designed to keep the ball out of the middle and you have to work really hard to keep it out of the middle,” said Powell. “You have to move from one spot to the next. When the team gets the ball inside, it opens up a number of possibilities. That’s what they did to us all night long.”

Uniontown’s win snapped a five-game losing skid and they sit at 3-6 in the section and 7-9 overall.

The Lady Red Raiders pack up and head to Latrobe Thursday.

“We’re refocused with all the adversity and injuries we’ve had,” said Winfrey. “We’re ready for the second half of section play.”

The loss is Albert Gallatin’s 15th straight (0-9, 1-17). They look to put one in the win column Thursday at home against Penn-Trafford.
