Dudzinski leads Leopards past Scotties Jacob Dudzinski poured in a game-high 24 points, including a three-pointer and a 5-of-6 outing from the foul line as Belle Vernon raced past visiting Southmoreland 70-57 in Section 3-AAA boys basketball action Tuesday.

Brian Layhue was next in the scoring column with 15 points, including 6-of-8 from the line.

The Leopards scored on 25 field goals and 15-of-24 from the foul line.

Bill Geyer paced Southmoreland with 18 points and teammate Matt Lochinger added 14, six of which came from beyond the three-point arc.

The Scotties hit 22 field goals and went 11-for-21 from the charity stripe.

Belle Vernon led by only three at the half, but caught fire in the second half including a 20-point fourth-quarter burst for the win.

The Leopards (7-13) are back in action Friday at Derry.

Carmichaels 63, Frazier 59 – A trio of Carmichaels players scored in double figures led by Jeremy Ganocy’s 17 points en route to a non-section overtime victory over host Frazier.

Phil Judy tossed in 13 points, including 3-of-4 from the line and Joby Lapkowicz added 11.

Despite the loss, Greg Johnson posted a double-double with a game-high 27 points and 11 rebounds.

Teammate Jim Traynor nearly had a triple double with 12 assists, 10 rebounds and eight points.

Vince Conti added nine points.

The Commodores rallied with a 19-point burst in the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime, but Carmichaels put together 11 compared to Frazier’s seven in the final period.

Frazier (8-9) travels to Geibel Catholic today.

California 76, Bentworth 70 – Chris McVicker put on a scoring exhibition with 30 points and five three-pointers as California downed Bentworth in non-section action.

John McVicker recorded 14, while Donte Valentino and Mike Hrivnak added 13 and 11 respectively.

Four Bentworth players scored in double digits with John Kennedy leading the way with 18 points.

Derek Jansante followed with 16, including 8-of-9 from the foul line.

Brandon Bular and Joe Kennedy added 13 and 11 points.

As a team, Bentworth shot an impressive 21-of-28 at the line, while the Trojans shot 7-for-14.

West Greene travels to California Friday.

Washington 54, Brownsville 30 – Jock Wells tossed in a game-high 16 points on seven field goals and 2-of-2 from the line as Washington cruised to an easy Section 5-AA win over Brownsville.

Teammate Tom Kelly was next in the scoring column with 12 points.

The Little Prexies scored on 22 field goals and shot 8-of-10 from the foul line, compared to Brownsville’s 12 field goals and 5-of-9 performance from the charity stripe.

Terrance McCoy paced the Falcons with 11 points.

Brownsville (4-14, 1-8) looks to snap a four-game losing skid Friday at home against Waynesburg Central.

Avella 63, Geibel Catholic 51 – Cole Heckman dropped in 15 points, including 7-of-8 from the foul line as Avella cruised to a non-section win over visiting Geibel Catholic.

Shea Georgetti was next with 13 points and C.J. Tottardi added 12.

Robert Orange led a trio of Gator double-digit scorers with 15 points.

Nine of Josh Herman’s 12 points came from beyond three-point land and Tyler Erdely added 10.

Geibel scored on 15 field goals and were 18-of-34 from the line, while Avella had 21 field goals and were 17-for-23 from the stripe.

Avella extends its record to 10-9, while the Gators (10-9, 2-3) host rival Frazier today.

Charleroi 50, Waynesburg Central 33 – John Bristor paced Charleroi with 13 points as Charleroi rolled past host Waynesburg Central in Section 5-AA action.

Charleroi jumped out to an early 15-6 first-quarter lead and never looked back.

Sean Fancher led all scorers with 15 points, two treys and 5-of-7 from the foul line.

Dominic Denicola also eclipsed the double-digit plateau with 10 points.

Waynesburg Central looks to bounce back against Carmichaels at home today.

Girls basketball

Shadyside Academy 71, Geibel Catholic 45 – Geibel Catholic bowed to Shadyside Academy in non-league play.

Shadyside jumped out to a 23-9 advantage after the first period and led 40-17 at the half.

The Lady Gators (11-5, 5-0) were kept at bay in the second half as the hosts posted a 17-14 advantage in the third period before the clubs traded points in a 14-all standoff over the final eight minutes of play.

Kathie Sheerer led a trio of double-figure scores for the winners with 21 points, Laura Daigneau and Raedial Lyles tossed up 11 apiece and Yanna Cox-Taylor added 10.

Natalie Hozak and Mia White were high scorers for the Lady Gators with 11 and 10 points respectively.

Geibel returns to league play Thursday as it hosts Jefferson-Morgan.

Girls swimming

Norwin 104, Uniontown 81 – Kaitlyn Johnson picked up a WPIAL Qualifying time in the 100 freestyle in 55.78 and a first place finish in the 50 freestyle (25.26), but visiting Norwin was too much for Uniontown in a non-section meet Tuesday.

Uniontown’s Jess Dzara claimed the 200 freestyle (no time) and Holly Nedley found gold in the 500 freestyle (5:47.41).

Teammate Teresa Stepanik won the diving with a score of 149.75.

The Lady Red Raiders (8-2) looks to bounce back Thursday on the road against Ringgold.

Peters Township 82, Laurel Highlands 78 – It was a rough day at the office for the Laurel Highlands swim team, as Peters Township defeated the Fillies in a Section 5-AAA contest.

Laurel Highlands (6-3) travels to Trinity Thursday starting at 6 p.m.

Boys swimming

Norwin 139, Uniontown 34 – Dan Rush was the lone first-place finisher for the Uniontown boys swim team with a score of 152.30 in diving.

After that it was all Norwin as the visitors upended the Red Raiders in a non-section win.

Uniontown (2-9) hopes to get back on the winning track Thursday at Ringgold.

Peters Township 81, Laurel Highlands 59 – Chris Hunchuck was the lone first-place finisher for the Laurel Highlands swim team with a win in the 100 butterfly (56.47), but it was all Peters Township in a Section 5-AAA contest.

The Mustangs (3-6) visit Trinity Thursday.

Wrestling

West Greene 63, South Park 6 – Colton Bloomer kicked things off at 112 for West Greene with a pin over Tyler Hoffman (5:16) and it was smooth sailing all the way as they rolled past host South Park in a Section 1-AA match.

At 119, Dakota Riffle pinned Colten Carmen in 1:59.

Teammate Kevin Courtright won by decision over Nicholas Kaczka 8-5 at 130 followed by a Kory Bissett pin over Pat Wark in 1:53 at 140.

West Greene claimed the next two bouts as Josh Durbin (145) won by decision over Cody Holt 1-0 and Tucker Conklin (152) won by decision over Martin Walker in 1:04.

In the 171 bout, Patrick Morris pinned Marc Ison in 1:17.

Garrett Johnston (125), Keith Watson (160), Chris Horr (189) and Mike Hildreth (285) all won by forfeit for the Pioneers.

The Pioneers host Waynesburg Central Friday.
