Albert Gallatin started its WPIAL Class AAA team playoffs first-round match Tuesday against Kiski Area on a strong note with a pin, forfeit and decision in the first four bouts, but the Cavaliers took off from that point for a 54-24 victory at Penn-Trafford. Lance Bryson won by fall in 1:56 at 171 pounds to start the match. Two bouts later, David Mitchell won by forfeit at 215 pounds and Jeremiah Karpency kept the momentum rolling at heavyweight with a 2-1 overtime win.
The Cavaliers had six pins and a forfeit in the next seven matches to gain control of the match.
Cody Mitchell got the Colonials back up on the board with a 3-2 decision at 145 pounds. Jeff Dulaney won by fall at 152.
Uniontown 39, Steel Valley 28 – The Red Raiders won seven bouts to defeat the visiting Ironmen for a non-section victory.
Sebastian Davanzo won by forfeit at 125 and Rich Roby kept the ball rolling with a 5-3 decision at 130. Jerry Wilson (140), Tyler Holt (152) and Jason King (215) all won by fall. Clint Payton (171) and Blayze Richardson (189) won by forfeit.
Uniontown (6-15) travels to Charleroi Friday for another non-section match.
Boys basketball
Uniontown 77, Derry 43 – The Red Raiders had two players score over 20 points as Uniontown cemented their claim to one of the four Section 3-AAA playoff berths.
Uniontown is now 7-3 in the section and 13-7 overall. The Trojans slip to 1-12 in the section standings and 3-18 overall.
The Red Raiders’ James Pratt made six field goals and a pair of two 3-pointers, in addition to making 6-of-7 free throws, for a game-high 24 points. Ryan Turner made a field goal and six 3-pointers to score 20 points.
Josh Thomas was also in double digits for Uniontown with 13 points.
Ryan Hauser led the Trojans with 15 points while Jordan Hope added 12.
California 58, Carmichaels 24 – The California defense held the Mikes to 10 points or less in all four quarters as the Trojans clinched at least a share of the Section 2-A crown.
California held Carmichaels to seven points in the first and third quarters and just five points in the second and fourth quarters. The Trojans (7-0, 18-2) led 28-12 at the half and 43-19 after three quarters.
Chris McVicker scored 13 points to move closer to 1,000 career points. He needs just 24 points as the Trojans travel to Mapletown Friday night. Mike Hrivnak scored a game-high 22 points with John McVicker adding 12.
Clairton 88, Frazier 66 – Greg Johnson scored 22 and Jim Traynor added 20, but the Bears were just too much for the visiting Commodores in Section 3-A action.
Ken Holt also scored in double digits for Frazier (3-4, 10-10) with 11 points.
Four players were in double figures for Clairton (6-1, 11-2) with Leroy George leading the way with 22 points. Ken Chapman finished with 18, Emanuel Cottrell scored 17, and Demitirius Rochelle added 16.
Jefferson-Morgan 50, West Greene 34 – The Rockets led 7-6 after the first quarter, and never trailed again for a Section 2-A home victory. Jefferson-Morgan was ahead 20-16 at the half and 34-24 after three quarters.
Mike Mox nailed four 3-pointers to score a team-high 16 points for the Rockets.
Jefferson-Morgan improves to 3-4 in the section and 5-14 overall while the Pioneers fall to 0-7 in the section and 1-16 overall.
Burgettstown 92, Brownsville 56 – The Blue Devils scored 23 points in each quarter to cruise to an easy Section 5-AA victory over the visiting Falcons.
Brian Pavan scored 18 points for Burgettstown (7-4, 13-7) with Sean Tunno and D.J. Smith scoring 13 points apiece.
Greg Allamon led Falcons (2-9, 5-15) with 11 points.
Franklin Regional 74, Connellsville 15 – Nick Novak scored a game-high 24 points for the Panthers to keep Franklin Regional in the hunt for a Section 1-AAAA playoff berth.
Franklin Regional improves to 7-4 in the section and 12-8 overall. The Falcons fall to 3-8 in the section and 5-14 overall.
Dino Defaldo scored 13, Ryan Fletcher had 12 and Tom Summers finished with 10 for the Panthers.
Rob Egan led four Falcons in double figures with 15 points. Trent Hurley scored 13, Mason Leos chipped in 11 and John Dilworth added 10.
Boys swimming
Belle Vernon 90, Uniontown 70 – The Leopards won every event except for diving for a non-section victory at Uniontown.
The Red Raiders’ Dan Rush won diving with a WPIAL-qualifying effort of 167.45 points. The 200 freestyle relay foursome of Emanuel Rosky, Brodie Kelley, Keanu Glisan and Luke Zajac finished second with Kelley adding a second place finish in the 100 butterfly and a third in the 50 freestyle.
Cory Wyke, Jeremy Matta, Zach Wardle and Jay Lewis started things off for the Leopards by winning the 200 medley relay in 2:03.11. Belle Vernon also won the 200 and 400 freestyle relays.
Wardle also had individual wins in the 200 freestyle (2:02.91) and 100 freestyle (54.02 seconds). Lewis won the 50 freestyle (25.66) with Matta taking first in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.54). Adam Hamill (100 backstroke) and Chris McConnell (500 freestyle) also won individual events for the Leopards.
Uniontown (2-9) hosts McKeesport Thursday in a Section 5-AAA meet.
Girls swimming
Uniontown 102, Belle Vernon 81 – The Lady Raiders’ Kaitlyn Johnson won the 200 freestyle, 100 butterfly and was the anchor leg in the victorious 200 and 400 freestyle relays as Uniontown won a non-section meet over the visiting Lady Leopards.
Katie Patek, Jess Dzara and Holly Nedley teamed with Johnson on both winning relays.
Rebecca Smith finished first in the 100 backstroke for the Lady Raiders with Josie Squibb winning the diving with 163.30 points.
Stacy Hoffman (50 freestyle, 100 breaststroke), Sydney Rusak (100 freestyle) and Alana Puskavich (500 freestyle) won individual events for Belle Vernon. Hoffman and Rusak also were on the winning 200 medley relay team.
