Carmichaels Legion rolls past Colonial, 9-3
Carmichaels scored in each of the first six innings in rolling to a 9-3 victory over visiting Colonial 3 in Fayette American Legion Baseball League action on Monday night. Winning pitcher Chuck Gasti went 3 for 4 with a pair of RBIs and Anthony Sarrar also had three hits as Carmichaels improved to 6-7.
“The bats really came alive tonight,” said manager Chuck Gasti, whose team has been playing shorthanded lately. “The last three games, including this one, we’ve been without about three or four starters.”
The younger Gasti, who is the manager’s son, ignited a two-run rally in the first inning when he singled and stole second. Scott Throckmorton followed with an RBI single and eventually came around to score on Donnie Hilenbrant’s single.
Carmichaels scored one run in each of the next four innings to go up 6-0 before Colonial got on the board with two runs in the sixth.
The hosts answered with their final three runs in the bottom of the sixth to all but put the game away.
Zach Durbin doubled and singled for Carmichaels, which also got a pair of hits from Throckmorton and Hilenbrant, with the latter driving in two runs. Aaron Thompson added a double as Carmichaels amassed 17 hits.
Gasti allowed two unearned runs on three hits and four walks with 12 strikeouts in eight innings.
Tyler Charles doubled and singled for Colonial, and Tony Battaglini also doubled.
Dave Genua took the loss.
Carmichaels has regular-season games left against Charleroi and Connellsville before the playoffs begin next Monday.
Charleroi over Uniontown – Uniontown failed in a chance to wrap up the Fayette regular-season title by losing at Charleroi on Monday, but can still clinch first place with one more win. The score of the game was not given.
