Golf Fayette County Open

The annual Fayette County Open will be held on Aug. 9-12 at the Uniontown Country Club, Pleasant Valley Country Club, The Links and Mystic Rock at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort.

Brandon Katzeff is the defending champion.

Lions Club scramble

The 12th annual Lions Club Community Benefit Golf Scramble will be held July 22 at Springdale G.C.

Entry fee is $60 per person or $240 per foursome, and payment is due before July 16.

A maximum of 30 teams will be acctpted. The event sold out the last six years.

Check-in time is 8 a.m. and tee times begin at 8:30.

There are cash prizes for the top three teams as well as a $10,000 hole-in-one prize, a Calloway Biggest Big Bertha drive, a Bose Wave Radio and Seiko Kinetic watch.

Condes wins IBF title

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) – Florante Condes of the Philippines won the International Boxing Federation’s mini-flyweight title with a split decision Saturday over Muhammad Rachman of Indonesia.

Klitschko beats Brewster

COLOGNE, Germany (AP) – Wladimir Klitschko beat Raymond Brewster with a technical knockout after six rounds on Saturday to successfully defend his IBF and IBO heavyweight titles.

Salazar out of hospital

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Alberto Salazar was released from the hospital Saturday, one week after the three-time New York City Marathon champion had a heart attack.

Officials at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center declined to provide details of Salazar’s departure or his condition.

Salazar, 48, collapsed while coaching distance runners at the Nike campus outside Portland. Doctors inserted a stent and determined that he had suffered a heart attack.

“He’s not relinquished any of his coaching,” said Kara Goucher, who placed second in the 10,000 meters last month at the USA Track & Field Championships.

Guidry delays retirement

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) – Jockey Mark Guidry has postponed his retirement for a few months while he waits to begin a second career as a racing official.

Guidry, 48, had planned to retire in August, but will keep riding until November. He is waiting for a school for prospective stewards at the University of Louisville to begin.
