Mill Run breezes past Blaney Farms

By The 4 min read

In a battle of two of the Fayette County Baseball League’s best, Mill Run had too much pop in their bats for Blaney Farms to handle as they earned a 7-1 victory on Friday. In the top of the first, Mill Run’s Jeremy blasted a three-run homer for the eventual game-winning hit off of Blaney starter Chris Brunson.

Blaney Farms got one run back in the bottom of the third, but, in the top of the sixth, Mill Run put the final touches on their impressive victory with a four spot in the frame. Two of those runs came on a Ryan Firestone long ball.

Bob Fulton also put together a solid night at the plate, going 2-2 with a double, a single, two walks and two runs scored.

Along with the power display, Mill Run got an outstanding pitching effort from starter Chris Lynn, who improved to 3-0 with his complete game performance. During the contest, Lynn struck out six hitters and yielded just four walks and three hits.

Mill Run also got some very timely defense to help seal the deal.

“I thought we played a decent game,” Mill Run head coach Ray Orndorf said. “Chris Lynn pitched a heck of a ball game and the homeruns provided us with most of our runs. We had two big double plays in the fifth and sixth innings that were rally-killers”

Mill Run will be looking for wins 13 and 14 today when they head to California for a double-headers starting at 2 p.m. Blaney Farms will have a long time to think about the loss as they don’t play again until July 7, when they host Phil’s Tire for a double-header of their own.

Carmichaels 12, Waynesburg 0 – Carmichaels pounded out 15 runs and got stellar pitching from starter Justin Schrader as they walloped Waynesburg in Fayette County League action.

Ron Nopwasky went 4-4 with two doubles, two singles and two runs scored to lead the offensive charge along with Zach Solly, who homered, singled twice and scored three runs on the night.

After a scoreless first, Carmichaels put themselves ahead for good with three runs in the top of the second. The inning started with Solly beating out an infield single. After Waynesburg got two outs, Nopwasky doubled Solly in and was followed by Phil Anderson reaching on an infield single. Both Anderson and Nopwasky advanced on an error and were driven in on a single by right fielder Zack Jeney.

The Copperheads went on to score a run in the third, six in the fifth and two in the sixth, all in support of Schrader (3-2), who threw a gem of a game. The righty recorded a whopping 13 strikeouts while yielding just five hits and three walks.

“This was a very important game for us,” Carmichaels head coach Dickie Krause said. “We’ve had a rough week and a half and it was a good rebound game for us. It all started with Justin on the mound and that was one of our best offensive showings of the year.”

Dominic Winters doubled for Waynesburg and Adam Dukate took the loss for the Mud Puppies, who dropped to 3-11-1 on the year.

Carmichaels improved to 6-5-2 on the season and faces Potter’s Clubhouse on Monday at 6 p.m. Waynesburg goes back to work on Tuesday when they travel to face Mill Run.

Dunbar 5, Yough 0 – The little leaguers from Dunbar picked up an impressive win over the team from Yough in a District 9 all-star game in Smithton.

Dunbar was led by Sean Reed, Zack Swift and Lucas Gida. Reed belted a three-run homer in the first inning to put his team ahead for good, but Dunbar got two more insurance runs on a pair of solo shots by Swift, who went yard in the fourth and sixth.

Gida was just as potent on the hill as Reed and Swift were at the plate as he pitched a three-hit complete game for the victory.

With the win, Dunbar moves on in the winners’ bracket to face Bullskin on Monday night at 6 p.m. in Dunbar. Yough drops into the losers’ bracket and will face Luzerne Township at 6 p.m. in Smithton.
