Greensburg Salem in tennis win over Connellsville The singles matches were close, but visiting Greensburg Salem was up to the task Wednesday for a 4-1 victory in Section 1-AAAA action at Connellsville.
The Golden Lions’ Riley Jorgenson won in straight sets at No. 1 singles over Blake Michaux, but needed a tiebreaker in the second set for the win. Greensburg Salem’s George Stewart lost a tiebreaker in the first set, but rallied past Andy Trump, 6-3, 6-4, for the victory.
The Falcons’ No. 1 doubles team of Jon Ambrisco and Tom Hann evened their match with Ben Kozakiewcz and Elliot Swayer, only to have the visitors secure the win and the match with a 6-2 third set.
Martin Bowkley and Carl Hoffelder gave the Golden Lions (1-0, 1-0) a sweep of the doubles with a 6-2, 6-1 win over the Falcons’ duo of Chris Coffman and Chase Hitlan.
Dave Witt helped Connellsville avoid a shutout, defeating John Syner at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-3.
Connellsville (1-1, 1-1) remains in section play Friday on the road at Franklin Regional.
College baseball
Marietta (Ohio) 11, Waynesburg 3 – The defending national champions scored three runs in the second and then exploded for five more in the third to defeat the visiting Yellow Jackets in non-conference action.
Trailing 9-0 after four innings, Waynesburg finally scored in the top of the sixth inning when freshman third baseman Dan Novak swatted a two-out RBI single. Marietta (10-3) wasted no time getting the run back, scoring a lone run in the bottom of the inning.
Ryan Group plated Ryan Lavrusky for the Yellow Jackets’ second run, and Landon Sinclair capped the scoring later in the seventh inning when he scored on a double play.
Group, Sinclair and West White, Jr. all had two hits for Waynesburg. The Yellow Jackets’ Chad Litten extended his hitting streak to eight games with a single in the sixth inning.
Cameron Cimino, Joe Litke and Don Pugliese all had three hits for Marietta. Dominick Winters led the way for the Pioneers with three RBIs.
Waynesburg (5-6) opens the Presidents’ Athletic Conference schedule Friday with a three-game weekend series against Thiel.
The Yellow Jackets play a regulation length game in Greenville on Friday and will host the Tomcats in a doubleheader on Saturday.
