Football Gators select Barlock

Geibel Catholic Middle-High School selected Jeff Barlock as head football coach.

Barlock served as running backs and defensive line coach under his predecessor, Angelo Dippolito, who resigned after six seasons for personal and health reasons.

The Gators were 0-9 last season and won four games under Dippolito’s watch. Barlock was 4-23 in three seasons (2002-2004) as head coach at Serra Catholic. Geibel Catholic competes in the Class A Tri-County South Conference.

Minor League no-hitter

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) – Devil Rays prospect Wade Davis threw his second seven-inning no-hitter in two seasons Friday night, striking out six in Class-A Vero Beach’s 4-0 victory over Jupiter in the Florida State League.

Davis (2-0) faced the minimum until a two-out walk in the sixth inning. The 6-foot-5 right-hander lowered his ERA from 2.16 to 1.73.

The seven-inning game was the second of a doubleheader. The first game was the final five innings of a game started Wednesday.

The 21-year-old Davis, the Devil Rays’ third-round draft pick in 2004, also threw a no-hitter on Aug. 31, his final start last season for Southwest Michigan of the Midwest League.

Cepeda charges reviewed

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) – Prosecutors are weighing possible drug charges against baseball Hall of Famer Orlando Cepeda after the California Highway Patrol forwarded its investigation Friday.

The former San Francisco Giants star was arrested Tuesday after a CHP officer discovered marijuana and a white powder substance in his 2001 Lexus. CHP officials say the white power appeared to be cocaine or methamphetamine, although it was still being tested.

The 69-year-old Cepeda was stopped after the officer clocked him driving 83 mph in a 65 mph zone on Interstate 80 northeast of San Francisco.

On Friday, the CHP forwarded its report to prosecutors, recommending Cepeda be charged with one felony count for possessing a controlled substance. In addition to the speeding violation, the CHP also recommended two misdemeanor charges, for possession of a syringe and possession of less than one ounce of marijuana, Sgt. Wulf Corrington said.

A spokeswoman for the Solano County District Attorney’s office said the report was being reviewed.

“Until a filing determination is made, the D.A.’s office will have no comment,” said Marsha Johnson, the office administrator.

In 1976, Cepeda was sentenced to five years in prison in his native Puerto Rico for attempting to smuggle marijuana.

Hancock was drunk

ST. LOUIS (AP) – St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Josh Hancock was drunk at the time of his fatal accident, and marijuana was found in the sport utility vehicle he was driving.

Police Chief Joe Mokwa also said at a news conference Friday that the 29-year-old Hancock was speaking on a cell phone at about the time of the crash early Sunday on Interstate 64 in St. Louis.

“Mr. Hancock was legally intoxicated at the time of the accident,” Mokwa said.

St. Louis medical examiner Michael Graham said Hancock’s blood-alcohol level was 0.157, nearly twice Missouri’s legal limit of 0.08.

Mokwa said 8.55 grams of marijuana and a glass pipe used to smoke marijuana were found in the rented Ford Explorer. Toxicology tests to determine if drugs were in his system had not been completed.

An accident reconstruction team determined Hancock was traveling 68 mph in a 55 mph zone when his SUV struck the back of a flatbed tow truck stopped in a driving lane. Mokwa said there was no evidence Hancock tried to stop. He did swerve, but too late to avoid the collision.

Graham said the pitcher died “within seconds” of head injuries. Hancock was not wearing a seat belt, but Graham said the belt would not have prevented his death.
