Softball WPIAL playoff update
Laurel Highlands, Waynesburg Central and California will try to join Belle Vernon, Beth-Center, Carmichaels and Jefferson-Morgan as area softball teams in the WPIAL playoffs this week.
The Fillies are one-half game behind third-place Yough, but control their own destiny because they split their season series with the Lady Cougars.
Laurel Highlands hosts Uniontown today and plays the Lady Raiders at Bailey Park in a 7 p.m. game on Tuesday. Victories in both of those games would clinch a playoff spot for LH. The Fillies could split the two games and still make the postseason if the Lady Cougars lose their final section game against first-place Greensburg Salem on Tuesday.
California is two games behind third-place Fort Cherry with two games to play, including one head-to-head make-up game that has yet to be scheduled. The two play each other three times and split the first two meetings.
To qualify for the playoffs, the Lady Trojans must defeat last-place Monessen on Tuesday and Fort Cherry, and the Lady Raiders must also lose at second-place Bentworth on Tuesday.
The Lady Raiders need to win one of their final three games to wrap up a playoff berth.
