Golf DeSouza All-America

California University of Pa. sophomore Simone DeSouza leapfrogged seven places in the final round Saturday to finish 10th overall at the NCAA Division II Women’s Golf Championships and earn All-America honors.

DeSouza was 17th through the completion of the Friday’s third round of the championship held at Stonebrook Golf Club in Pensacola, Fla., with a three-round total of 229 after shooting a 2-over-par 74.

DeSouza shot 74, including 1-over on the back nine with eight pars and a bogey, in the final round to jump to 10th and earn automatic All-America recognition. She finished with a four-day total of 15-over-par 303.

Florida Tech’s Daniella Iocebelli was the individual national champion with a 293. Florida Southern won the team title with a 36-over-par 1,188.

Rollins College trailed by 10 strokes in second place.

The Vulcans finished third.

Auto racing

Motordrome results

Connellsville’s Bobby Henry followed up the first-place finish in his heat Friday with a first-place finish in the NAPA Late Models 35-lap feature at the Motordrome Speedway.

Rick Miller, the other heat winner, was second to Henry in the final.

Gary Scott finished first in the Lincoln Welders Modifieds 20-lap feature, ahead of Adam Kostelnik, the other heat winner.

Kostelnik managed to win a checkered flag in the 20-lap Subway Street Stocks. Mike Lemley won the Yellow Book Chargers while Jay Matthews finished first in the American Flyers.

Hamlin is Busch winner

DARLINGTON, S.C. (AP) – Denny Hamlin won his second straight Diamond Hill Plywood 200 on Friday night, again surviving a wreck-filled Busch Series event at Darlington Raceway.

Hamlin, fourth in the Nextel Cup standings, raced to his third Busch Series victory – and won from the pole at “The Lady In Black” for the second consecutive year.

Botas running fast

Emily Bota, a Laurel Highlands graduate, finished fourth in the 100 for Bethany (W.Va.) College Thursday at the Allegheny College Invitational.

The Bison sophomore was fourth with a time of 13.51 seconds after running 13.33 in the preliminary heat.

Brother Alex joined Matt Cruse, Andy Kotson and Taylor McNeil for a third-place finish in the 400 relay with a season-best time of 43.08 seconds.
