Shultz fires 5-hit shutout as Bud Murphy’s tops Mill Run Bud Murphy’s scored the only run winning pitcher Casey Shultz would need in the bottom of the second inning Sunday, adding a pair of insurance runs in the third to open the Fayette County Baseball League season with a 3-0 win over visiting Mill Run.
Dave Gomas walked in the second and moved to second on Brian Shipley’s single. He scored the first run for Bud Murphy’s on Richie Means’ single.
In the third inning, Dean Lewandowski was hit by a pitch. He scored on Ryan Miscik’s double and Miscik then scored on Brian Sankovich’s single.
Mill Run threatened in the seventh with a one-out single, but centerfielder Wes Hughes threw the runner out trying to stretch the hit into a double. The next two batters singled for Mill Run, but Shultz stranded runners at the corners to preserve the win and the complete game.
Shultz went the distance for the win, striking out eight and walking two. Shipley finished with two singles for Bud Murphy’s.
Ryan Firestone and Chad Shroyer each had two hits to account for four of Mill Run’s five hits. Travis Henry went four innings in the loss, striking out four and walking four while allowing three earned runs. Bobby Fulton pitched the final two innings, allowing one hits with a strikeout and no walks.
California 5, Waynesburg 3 – The visitors held a tenuous 2-1 lead through four innings before hitting stride with three runs in the top of the fifth inning to open the Fayette County Baseball League with a road victory.
The first run of the inning scored on a wild pitch. Chris Marchewka brought home the second run with a sacrifice fly and Ryan Encapera’s single plated the final run of the inning.
Waynesburg rallied with two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but Matt Stay finished what he started for the complete-game victory.
With the game tied 1-1 after two innings, Andy Galis put California back in the lead with a solo home run in the top of the third inning. Galis also singled in the game.
Stay gave up five hits while striking out seven and walking four. Encapera finished with two singles and two RBIs.
Derek Behrens had a double, triple and an RBI for Waynesburg. Adam Dukate finished with a double, single and two RBIs. Travis Largent went the distance in taking the loss, allowing eight hits while striking out five and walking five.
