Local Auto Racing: Henry going for second Late models win

By Dave Dragovich For The 5 min read

Memorial Day weekend is here. A great way to spend the holiday weekend is to visit your favorite auto racing facility and enjoy some exciting, fast-paced, heart pounding action. The following is a rundown of area track activities this coming weekend. Motordrome Speedway-Bobby Henry of Connellsville, will be gunning for his second Late Model feature in a row at Motordrome Speedway, as five division racing continues at the Smithton oval. Late Model competition has produced three different winners in the three shows completed thus far. Twenty-five Late Models have competed at Motordrome in 2007, with some drivers traveling from as far away as New York.

Adam Kostelnik is three for three in Street Stock competition. Shawn Phillips, of Jefferson, Greene Co., among other drivers, is looking to break Kostelnik’s consecutive winning streak. Dawson’s Mike Lemley is on a roll in the Charger class and could possibly take over the points lead with a feature win on Friday night.

Also on tap are bike races for the kids.

Motordrome Speedway is located on Interstate 70, Exit 49. Gates open at 5:30pm, and racing action begins promptly at 7:30pm.

Roaring Knob Motorsports Complex-There have been fourteen different winners in fifteen feature events at the Markleysburg speed plant in 2007. Robbie Black is the only repeat winner. Who will be the next? Will there be a repeat winner this weekend? Or will the competition continue to produce first time winners in the five-division program? Fans will have these questions answered when they visit Roaring Knob this coming Saturday evening, May 26th. The Knob is located just off Route 40 in the Markleysburg area, just up the road from the Youghiogheny Dam. Gates open at 4pm, practice gets underway at 6:15pm, and the races start at 7pm sharp.

Jennerstown Speedway-Located at the intersection of Route 30 and Route 985 in the scenic Laurel Highlands, the big half mile oval kicks off the season on Saturday evening, May 26th, with the Super Late Models, Street Stocks, and Hobby Stocks tackling the asphalt surface. The Motordrome Speedway Modifieds will also be on the card for the Season Opener. The green flag drops an hour and a half later in 2007 than in previous years. The starting time has been changed to 7:30pm, with grandstand gates opening at 5:30pm, and practice beginning at 6:30pm.

Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway-Will be in action on Saturday night, May 26th, with Twin 20-lap features for the Late Models, plus regular racing for the Crate Late Models, E-Mods, Pure Stocks, Amateur Stocks, and Young Guns. Gates will open at 5pm, and all the racing action begins at 7pm. PPMS is located just twenty minutes from Downtown Pittsburgh on Route 22 at the Noblestown exit.

Mark your calendars for Sunday, July 1, 2007, as PPMS will run the “Red Miley Memorial”. Red was the promoter of the family run speedway, and also the owner and promoter of Motordrome Speedway. Sadly, Red recently lost his courageous battle with cancer. He’ll always be remembered as a leader in his community, a successful businessman, a family man, and most of all, a friend. He leaves behind a wife and three young children who meant the world to him. Red was born in 1953, and was 53-years old when he passed away on 5-3. In his honor, the Red Miley Memorial will consist of 53-laps for the Late Models, with $5,300 going to the winner. All other classes will race that

Day, and fans will also be treated to a Demolition Derby.

Hagerstown Speedway-Located on Route 40 East in Maryland, minutes away from the Clear Spring exit on I-70 East, Hagerstown Speedway has two big nights of racing scheduled for Memorial Day weekend. On Friday evening, May 25th, at 7:30pm, the Late Model Sportsman will run a 25-lap exhibition charity race. The Enduro cars will also be in action. Admission on Friday is absolutely FREE, and all donations will be accepted by charity. On Saturday, May 26th, at 7pm, Hagerstown Speedway presents the 12th Annual Richard “Boney” Bonebrake Tribute, which is a 40-lap feature for the Late Models, plus the Late Model Sportsman and the Pure Stocks.
