Ex-Steeler Robin Cole B’nai B’rith speaker

Robin Cole, who won two Super Bowl championships with the Pittsburgh Steelers, will be the guest speaker at the 50th annual B’nai B’rith Sports Award Night banquet, to be held Tuesday at the Uniontown Jewish Community Center. Cole was the Steelers’ first-round draft pick in 1977. He came to Pittsburgh from the University of New Mexico, where he was an All-America selection, team captain and a Hall of Fame inductee.

He started both at inside and outside linebacker for the Steelers and won Super Bowl championships following the 1978 and 1979 seasons. Cole played for Pittsburgh from 1977 through 1987 and played one season (1988) with the New York Jets.

His various affiliations include serving on the board of Central Christian Academy and Waynesburg College. He is a lifetime member of the NAACP and a member of the NFL Players Association and an NFL Alumni. Cole has service relationships with Big Brothers/Big Sisters, March of Dimes, The United Way, the Arthritis Foundation, National Safety Foundation, The Salvation Army and the Illeis-Colitis Foundation.

Cole will speak to a group of outstanding high school and college student/athletes. The highlight of the evening will be the presentation of the Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus scholarship to Debra Ellis of Uniontown.

Also being honored are graduating seniors from each of Fayette County’s seven high schools and an athlete from Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus, plus a Special Olympics athlete.

This year’s Special Olympics athlete is Janine Swaney.

The Eberly Campus athlete is volleyball player Kelli Kite of Connellsville. She will be joined by the following graduating seniors from Fayette County high schools:

Sara Zebley, who played volleyball at Frazier High School; Sabrina Rebekah Szabo, who played soccer, basketball and softball at Geibel Catholic High School; Devan Michelle Grote, who played soccer, ran track and was a swimmer at Uniontown High School; Elizabeth A. Bell, who played soccer and softball at Connellsville High School; Nicole Kerestine, who played tennis, basketball and softball at Brownsville High School; Casey Conn, who ran Cross Country and track and field at Laurel Highlands High School, and Dave Mitchell, who won eight letters in football, wrestling and track and field at Albert Gallatin High School.
