Thiel to reinstate golf programs
GREENVILLE, Pa. (AP) – Thiel College will reinstate the men’s and women’s golf programs in the fall, the school said Friday. “After a one-year hiatus, we have had an opportunity to evaluate our decision and create a plan to make these teams more competitive and more satisfying to existing and potential student athletes,” Roseanne Gill-Jacobson, vice president for student life and interim athletic director, said in a statement.
The college announced in February 2006 that it was cutting men’s and women’s teams in golf, cross country and tennis.
Gill-Jacobson said the commitment of a local practice and competition course was a key factor in the decision to reinstate the programs. In April, two Thiel alumni said they were buying the Greenville Country Club, the future of which had been uncertain.
Thiel, a private school with about 1,300 students located about 70 miles north of Pittsburgh, is a member of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference. Most of its sports programs compete at the NCAA Division III level.
