Late rally carries Whitman, B-C past Burgettstown Geri Whitman hurled a one-hitter and the Lady Bulldogs scored eight runs in the top of the seventh inning Monday for an 8-0 Section 2-AA victory at Burgettstown.
Tyffini Balog was safe on an error with one out in the seventh. Lauren Snyder drove in Balog and moved to second on the throw. Ashley Neifert’s second double of the game brought home Snyder. Tonya Carroll singled and Whitman walked to load the bases for Jessica Schinkoveck, and she delivered a two-run single.
Chelsea Lazosky kept the inning alive with a run-scoring double, and Balog followed with another double. Ashley Weaver’s single brought home Balog with the eighth run, but the inning ended with Weaver thrown out on second base on the play.
Whitman (9-2) struck out 17 and walked four while holding the Lady Blue Devils to a single in the sixth inning.
Belle Vernon 7, West Mifflin 2 – The Lady Leopards scored five runs in the top of the third inning, and winning pitcher Ashley Nichols held the Lady Titans to four hits for an important Section 4-AAA road victory.
Belle Vernon improves to 6-4 in the section and 7-5 overall, and will host Waynesburg Central this afternoon.
Nichols (7-5) went the distance, striking out 13 and walking four, and helped herself with a solo home run. Alana Lacey, Heather Sellew and Ashley Dawson all had a double and RBI. Paige Anderson finished with a double, single and RBI. Jessica Zites had a pair of singles and an RBI, and Katie Gauden added an RBI single.
West Mifflin’s Amanda Varhula and Sydnie Martin accounted for the offense with two singles and an RBI each.
Waynesburg Central 5, McGuffey 0 – Alyson Johnson had an RBI double in the third inning and smacked a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth, and Lauren Minor hurled a complete-game shutout to lead the Raiders to a Section 4-AAA home victory.
Emily Bosworth’s double added to Johnson’s RBI hit in the third for a 2-0. Leading 3-0 after five innings, Waynesburg added two more on RBI singles by Rachel Rohanna and Ashley Wilkinson.
Minor (7-0) allowed four hits, striking out eight and walking none. Courtney Orndoff came around to score after she doubled in the second inning, and added a single later in the game.
Waynesburg Central heads into this afternoon’s key section game at Belle Vernon with a section and overall record of 8-1.
Albert Gallatin 4, Canon-McMillan 2 – The Lady Colonials scored all their runs in the bottom of the fourth, erasing a 2-0 deficit for a non-section home victory. Albert Gallatin improves to 5-6 overall.
After the Big Macs scored two runs in the top of the fifth inning, Chelsea Hellen opened the sixth with a single. Jen Lewellen was safe on an error, and both runners advanced a base on an infield out. Ashley Petrone brought both runners home with a double, and came around to score on Nicole Lovett’s triple. Lovett scored on an error.
Gabbie Ross improved to 2-0 with the victory, allowing six hits with nine strikeouts and four walks.
High school baseball
Latrobe 7, Albert Gallatin 4 – The Colonials committed six errors, allowing the Wildcats to score six unearned runs for a Section 2-AAAA home victory.
Latrobe improves to 6-1 in the section and 9-3 overall, while Albert Gallatin falls to 0-7 in the section and 2-8 overall.
The Wildcats scored three unearned in the second inning for all the offense winning pitcher Brad Burkhardt would need. Burkhardt went the distance, striking out four and walking none.
Albert Gallatin rallied in the top of the fourth to tie the game. Tanner Jesso, who finished 3-for-3, and Mike Petrun had run-scoring singles, and A.J. Barnas had a sacrifice fly.
Latrobe regained the lead with an unearned run in the bottom of the inning, and then added three more runs, two unearned, in the fifth inning.
The Colonials scored a lone run in the seventh inning.
Wayne Morgan had a triple and double for Albert Gallatin, and Barnas belted a double. Mike Kubitza (0-3) went the distance as well, striking out three and walking two.
The Colonials host Penn Trafford Wednesday afternoon.
Laurel Highlands 6, Kittanning 1 – The Mustangs tied the game with a single run in the fourth inning, and took the lead for good with a 3-run fifth inning for a Section 2-AAA road victory.
Ethan Mildren started for Laurel Highlands and went four innings before leaving with an injury. Dylan Clifford came on in relief to earn the win, striking out two, walking three and allowing no runs in the final three innings of work.
Nick Erminio had a double and two singles in the victory, and John Boskovich had a run-scoring double in the fourth and a single.
Carmen Congelio also doubled. Mason Tupta went 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Laurel Highlands (7-1, 10-3) hosts Indiana Wednesday at Hutchinson at 4:15 p.m.
Beth-Center 11, Fort Cherry 3 – The Bulldogs scored at least one run in each of the first five innings to beat the Rangers for a Section 2-AA road victory.
Beth-Center scored one in the top of the first, two in the second, four in the third, three more in the fourth, and a final run in the fifth on 12 hits.
Austin Smith went 2-for-4 with a double, three RBI and two stolen bases. Grant Looman had a double, single, two runs scored and an RBI. Matt Sabatini had a strong game with two singles, two runs scored, an RBI and a stolen base. E.J. McCarty had two singles and Josh Morse added a double.
Jeff Tarley went the first five innings for the win, striking out six and walking two. Mike Bodner finished the game, striking out four and walking none.
The Bulldogs (4-3, 4-5) host Washington Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. Fort Cherry remains winless, falling to 0-6 in the section and 0-8 overall.
Charleroi 13, Brownsville 6 – The Falcons led 3-0 after two innings and 5-2 through three innings, but the Cougars scored three in the top of the fourth, and four in each of the fifth and sixth innings for a Section 2-AA road victory.
Isaih Bell went the distance for the win, striking out four and walking four. He helped the Cougars at the plate with a double.
Brian Ohler (4-3) went the first four innings, striking out four and walking five. Eric Landman had a double for the Falcons, and T.J. Lanzi and Mike Vasiloff both swatted a pair of singles.
Brownsville (5-2, 7-3) takes a break from section action with a non-section home game Thursday against Albert Gallatin. Charleroi improves to 4-2 in the section.
Boys tennis
Mount Pleasant 5, Brownsville 0 – The Vikings didn’t drop a game to remain atop the Section 1-AA standings with a road victory at Brownsville.
Mount Pleasant improves to 10-0 in the section. Brownsville is now 2-9 in the section as well as overall.
The Vikings’ Kyle Bradley beat Christian Sally at No. 1 singles, and Dave Cenkner won at No. 2 singles against Albert Petrosky. The Falcons’ Joe Pahula dropped his No. 3 singles match to Scott Swank.
Mount Pleasant’s Justin DePalma and Nick Marhefka beat Brownsville’s No.1 doubles team of Brittany Chiovitti and Jason Bella, and Ross Campbell and Matt Lesko completed the shutout at No. 2 doubles by beating Richard Pahula and Joe Kromer.
The Falcons return to action Thursday in the Section 1-AA doubles tournament.
Men’s golf
Presidents’ Athletic Conference Championships – The Yellow Jackets are in fifth place after the opening day of the conference championships being held at Oak Tree Country Club in West Middlesex.
Waynesburg Central Tommy Rohanna and Ryan Heilman both ended the first day of competition with a 7-over-par 71. Connellsville’s Ryan Work shot an 83, Sean Call carded an 88 and Mike Quinn finished with an 89.
The Yellow Jackets finished the first round with a team score of 43-over 327. Washington & Jefferson leads with a 302, Grove City is second at 316, and Westminster stands third with a 320.
Women’s golf
Presidents’ Athletic Conference Championships – The Yellow Jackets competed as individuals in the opening round of the conference championships hosted by Oak Tree Country Club in West Middlesex.
Tara Marcischak shot a 124 to stand 20th overall with Carmichaels grad Jamie Imhoff at 25th overall.
Washington & Jefferson leads the team competition with a total of 357. W&J’s Leslie Walker stands atop the leaderboard with an 8-over 80.
College softball
Waynesburg 9, Westminster 1; Waynesburg 6, Westminster 4 – The Yellow Jackets pushed their Presidents’ Athletic Conference record above .500 with a doubleheader sweep at Waynesburg.
With the first game tied 1-1, Waynesburg exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the fourth inning sparked by Amanda Baughman’s 3-run home run.
Baughman finished with four RBIs and scored two runs. Amy Mills drove in two runs and Haley Kramer went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Waynesburg Central grad Autumn Minor improved to 9-6, allowing an earned run on three hits with five strikeouts and a walk in five innings.
In the second game, the Yellow Jackets scored the game-winning run in the top of the seventh when Minor launched a two-run home run, her fourth of the season. Minor went 3-for-4 with three RBIs.
Baughman (5-6) pitched seven innings to win the nightcap, allowing four runs (three earned) on nine hits with a walk and three strikeouts. Baughman also had a good day at the plate, going 3-of-4 with an RBI and run scored. Kristyn Klueg was 2-for-4 with two RBI and Amber Pivik finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
