Lenkey holding on at Fayette Open
FARMINGTON – Although he wasn’t real pleased with Saturday’s third round at The Links, John Lenkey remained atop the 84 Lumber Fayette County Open leaderboard for a chance to go wire-to-wire for his first title. The final round returns to The Links course today with a 1 p.m. start. The final threesome should tee it up sometime around 3 p.m.
Lenkey shot a 5-over-par 75 for a three-round total of 217.
“All I wanted to do is shoot even par. For me (at The Links), that’s not difficult,” said Lenkey. “I hit it pretty good. My score doesn’t reflect it.
“I had good looks at birdie on No. 16 and 17, but just didn’t make the putt. There were a few putts I should’ve made, and didn’t.”
Seth Rockwell was the only golfer to make a move on the leader by shooting a 2-over 72 to trail by three strokes at 220. Rockwell had a good start with a birdie, but bogeyed the next two holes.
“It felt good to get that first hole out of the way,” said Rockwell, who shot 36 on both nines. “After the bogeys, I pretty much parred out.”
Obviously, anything can happen over the final 18 holes, something the younger Rockwell acknowledged when asked about the possibility of leapfrogging into the lead on the final day.
“The pins could be in crazy places. I want to get the momentum going. I definitely feel good going into the last round,” said Rockwell.
Rockwell’s older brother Zach trails by eight strokes after shooting a 5-over 75. He’s tied with Steve Superick, who carded a 78.
While the younger Rockwell believes he’s carrying momentum into the final round, the elder brother faltered in the finishing holes.
“I started off good, but didn’t finish strong. I had two double bogeys in the last five holes. Overall, I played well,” said Zach Rockwell.
As for his chances to inch up the leaderboard, Rockwell said, “There’s enough holes to make a move. It’s been a long time since I’ve been in position to watch a scoreboard. I’ll just take what the course gives me.
“Hopefully, I’ll like it.”
Mike Revak shot a 79 and Ryan Bashour carded a 75 to finish tied at 227.
