Crawford lifts the Bulldogs past Mikes in sudden-death Travis Crawford made a 15-foot putt on the No. 1 hole to give Beth-Center a big section victory over Carmichaels in a sudden-death playoff Thursday after the teams tied 219-219 in Division II, Section 8 golf action at Carmichaels Golf Course.

Crawford shot a 41 and was chosen to compete in the playoff against Carmichaels No. 1 golfer, Zack Wolfe, who shot a 38 in the match.

Crawford had a 35-yard tee shot, but battled back to put the ball on the green made a par putt. Wolfe bogeyed as the Bulldogs upped their record to 1-3 in the section and 2-3 overall.

Teddy Yanak (37) and Jimmy Webeck (41) had the top two scores for Beth-Center.

Brandon Wolfe (39), Travis Mateleska, (46), Travis Prodan (47) and Justin Phillips (49) rounded out the scoring for Carmichaels (1-1, 2-2).

Patrick Ritsko (48) and Alex Antonio (52) were the final two golfers to score for Beth-Center, and they tied the match.

Mount Pleasant 193, Laurel Highlands 202 – Mount Pleasant and Laurel Highlands went down to the wire in Division I, Section 2 golf action as the Vikings pulled out a victory over the Mustangs at Duck Hollow Golf Course.

Ryan Bull and Zach Heide entered the match as the Vikings’ No. 5 and 6 golfers, and shot the low rounds for their team as Bull shot a 36 and Heide a 38 on the front nine of the Par 35 course.

Alex Ashton’s 39 was the low round of the day for the home team, and No. 1 starter Ben Thorn shot a 40 for Laurel Highlands. Nate Nesser and Ben Sutton had matching 40’s for the Mustangs, who fell to 2-2 in the section and overall.

Jordan Jones (39), Dylan Firmstone (40) and Mike Bando (40) rounded out the scoring for the Vikings.

Dave Byers 43 closed out the scoring for the Mustangs.

Mount Pleasant improves to 3-1 on the season in section and overall play.

Ringgold is up next for Laurel Highlands on Tuesday at Cedarbrook Golf Course.

Uniontown 222, Southmoreland 229 – Chip Smith’s 42 did not help the Scotties as they dropped a Division I, Section 2 match to the Red Raiders Thursday afternoon at Timber Ridge Golf Course.

Mason Fordyce and Chris Steele shot 43s to help Uniontown win its first section match of the year.

With the loss, Southmoreland falls to 1-3, while Uniontown ups its record to 1-3 in the section and 3-3 overall.

Andrew Dzambo (43) and Dan Wright (44) put Southmoreland in contention with impressive scores, but Uniontown responded with 45s from Cody Nypaver and Chris Perrotta.

Von Rhodes and Ben Schenck shot 50s, and Ben Sampson’s 46 put the match away for Uniontown.

Belle Vernon 204, Albert Gallatin 243 – Belle Vernon was impressive from the first golfer to its No. 5 player in defeating Albert Gallatin at Duck Hollow Golf Course.

Bo Lustig shot a 1-over-par 36 on the front nine of the 18-hole layout, and Albert Gallatin’s Mike Petrun shot a 38 to keep the Colonials in the match.

However, Mark Bartok (49) could not match Dave Johnson’s (40), and the Leopards were well on their way to the fourth section win of the year in as many tries.

Taylor Barnickel (49), Nick Black (51) and Caleb Voithofer (56) rounded out the scoring for the Colonials who only had five golfers.

Albert Gallatin falls to 0-4.

Ringgold 214, Connellsville 227 – Ringgold continued its winning ways with an impressive victory over Connellsville at Pleasant Valley County Club.

Connellsville’s Michael Herman was the Falcons’ No. 3 golfer, and put up a 41 to help the Falcons’ cause, but Ringgold’s No. 3, Alex Allen also fired a 41.

Mike Yavorsky (40) and David Marchewka (40) put Ringgold in a good spot to up its record to 3-0 in the section and 4-0 overall.

Jesse Salyers (45) and Shane Campbell (47) were the No. 1 and 2 golfers for the Falcons who dropped to 1-3.

Johnny Leonard’s 45 and Jarret Gallentine’s 49 were the final two scores for Connellsville.

Rico Rodriguez (45) and Garret Breinig (48) rounded out the scoring for the Rams.

Next up for Connellsville will be Uniontown on Tuesday at Duck Hollow Golf Course.

California 191, Jefferson-Morgan 215 – California used a 1-under-par 35 from David Beck to defeat Jefferson-Morgan in Division II, Section 8 golf action at Cedarbrook Golf Course.

Tyler Van Olst (36), Phillip Langley (39) and Zac Edmiston (39) put the Trojans in a good spot to up their record to 2-1 in the section and 2-2 overall.

“We have a pretty good team this year,” California coach Bill Fabbri said.

“This is the first time in four or five years that we have beaten Jefferson-Morgan. They have a good team and are very respectable.”

Zach Berkstressar shot a 38 for Jefferson-Morgan’s low round of the day.

Ian Lawrance (41) and Joe DeFrancesco (42) helped keep the Rockets in the match, but Derrek Wible’s 42 put the match away for California.

Alex Rush (42) and Josh Kokoska (42) had the last two scores for Jefferson-Morgan. With the loss, the Rockets dropped to 2-1 in the section and overall.

Frazier 205, Charleroi 240 – Frazier had a fine day in defeating the Cougars in Section 2 golf action at Mon Valley County Club.

Dustin Lerda (39) Craig Rebovich (39) and Nick Hawranko (37) had impressive scores for the Commodores.

Charleroi’s top pair of Anderson (44) and Taylor Andrisko (44) led the way, and Zak Wright shot a 47 for Charleroi.

Kirk Melenyzer (52) and Martin Maytas (53) rounded out Charleroi’s scoring.

Girls tennis

Latrobe 4, Connellsville 0 – Connellsville faced a tough loss at Latrobe Thursday afternoon in Section 1-AAA girls’ tennis action with the second doubles match being rained out.

In No. 1 singles, Koell Kissel defeated Laura Husband in straight sets 6-0, 6-0 to give Latrobe the early advantage.

Stacia Kissel defeated Casey Nicholson 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 2 matchup and the match looked bleak for the Lady Falcons (0-2, 1-2).

Latrobe’s Jess Murtha made it a clean sweep in singles with a 6-4, 6-1 straight sets victory over Caitlyn Anderson.

Julia Defobo and Andrea Sutyak picked up a straight sets victory over Alyssa Augustine and Rachelle Wiltrout; 6-0, 6-0 in No. 1 doubles action.

Connellsville’s Lyndsey Boors and Kylie Kerns were in a 5-5 match against Regina Woloshum and Catelyn Hill 5-5 when the rain stopped the action but the victory belonged to Latrobe (2-0).

Mt. Pleasant 3, Brownsville 0 – Mount Pleasant picked up a shutout road victory after winning the doubles matches and one singles over Brownsville Thursday afternoon in Section 1-AA action.

Mt. Pleasant’s Jessica McKetta and Stephanie Sleva defeated Erin Ryan and Alyssa Conner 6-1, 6-1 to pick up the No. 1 doubles match.

Rachel Bradley and Heather Grant followed that match up with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Kendall Connors and Rachel Rihaly.

Mount Pleasant’s Shayla Landman defeated Ferrell Jellots 6-1, 6-2 to put the match away for the Lady Vikings.

Brownsville’s Angie Pelehac was leading Rebecca Cenkner 1-6, 6-4, 5-3 when the action was called.

Men’s soccer

California UPa 4, Alderson-Broaddus 1 – California University of Pennsylvania used three second-half goals to defeat Alderson-Broaddus in the first game of the season for both teams.

The win was the 200th of coach Dennis Laskey’s career for the Vulcans, who got their first goal from Spencer Cridar at 39:01 of the first half.

The first half ended with California leading, 1-0. The Vulcans had goals from Shakir McCoy and Mike Luecke to go up 3-0 before Alderson-Broaddus got its first goal.
