FCCA soccer tournament held at Laurel Highlands Laurel Highlands scored the first seven goals in defeating Uniontown 11-2 in the FCCA Soccer Tournament Saturday at Laurel Highlands.

Elliott Weiss scored two goals in the first half and one in the second to pick up the hat trick for the Mustangs.

Brandon Quinn broke the shutout with a goal for Uniontown with 24:31 reaming in the second half.

The contest gave Laurel Highlands two victories on the day and Uniontown was 1-1.

Laurel Highlands 3, Connellsville 0 – Laurel Highlands scored a late goal in the first half, and that was all it needed to defeat Connellsville on the Mustangs home turf.

Elliott Weiss scored for the Mustangs with 14:14 left to go in the first half as he had an excellent day with four goals in two games.

Ben Kooser knocked in a goal with 14:08 to go in the second half and teammate Cody Whoolery was not far behind with a goal at 13:20.

Connellsville 5, Albert Gallatin 0 – Connellsville put up four goals in the first half and never looked back, defeating Albert Gallatin.

Ethan Saylor had a goal for the Falcons with 30:22 left in the first half. Devin Nudo scored less than a minute later with 29:29 remaining in the first and the rout was on.

Lucas Saylor scored with 57 seconds remaining to ice the game for Connellsville, which was 1-1. Albert Gallatin finished at 1-1.

Uniontown 3, Geibel Catholic 1 – Uniontown won its first game of the tournament over Geibel after rallying with three goals in the second half.

Geibel scored first on a goal by Christian Fally with 3:40 remaining in the first half.

Uniontown responded with Aaron Sabatula’s goal at 31:43 left in the second and Brett Krysak responded a minute later with a goal to put Uniontown up 2-1.

Sabatula iced the game for the Red Raiders with a goal at 18:11 remaining in the second half.

Geibel finished the tournament at 1-1.

Albert Gallatin 3, Brownsville 2 – The Falcons could not get it done against the Colonials as Christian Fally had two goals down the stretch for Brownsville.

Albert Gallatin’s Craig Swanson had two goals in the second half to put the Colonials up 2-0 but Fally scored two goals with 4:25 and 3:40 left in the game.

Brownsville did not win a game.

Geibel Catholic 2, Brownsville 1 – Geibel picked up a win over Brownville in a contest that was back and forth from the start.

Max Kovalchuk scored to put the Gators up 1-0 and Brownsville’s Chelsea Ulrey tied the game at one.

Will Jeffries had the game-winning goal for Geibel.

Waynesburg Central 3, McKeesport 2 – It was the Jon Rensing show as he accounted for all three of Waynesburg’s goal in victory over McKeesport Saturday afternoon in the Belle Vernon Kick-off Classic.

Rensing scored in the 28th minute to take a 1-0 lead in the first half. McKeesport tied the game at one and both teams entered the second half tied.

Rensing scored again in the 54th minute on a goal that was assisted by Vince Camps.

Alex Uhal tied the game in the 63rd minute for McKeesport but Camps scored in the 74th minute to give his team a 3-2 lead they would not relinquish. Rensing assisted on Camps’ goal.

Women’s Soccer

California 2, Wheeling Jesuit 0 – The Vulcans picked up an impressive victory over visiting Wheeling Jesuit .

Darija Davidson scored for California at 1:25 of the first-half and that was the entire scoring California keeper Erin Cook would need.

Cook only had two stop two Wheeling Jesuit shots. On the other hand, California had 26 shots on goals as it improved to 2-0 on the season while Wheeling Jesuit fell to 1-1.

Raghen Morrow scored at 39:21 of the first half to extend the Vulcan lead to 2-0 on a breakaway goal.

Women’s Volleyball

California 3, Nova Southeastern 1 – California picked up an impressive victory over No. 24 ranked Nova Southeastern in four sets in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. at the NSU Sharks Classic.

California 3, Barry 2 – Barry pushed California to the final set, but the Vulcans were able to pull out a victory.

Joanna Mist had 20 kills to lead the California attack, which record now stands at 4-0 on the young season. Barry falls to 3-1 after the loss.

Men’s baseball

Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus 3-13 CCAC Boyce 0-3 – Penn State Fayette was able to pull out a tough shut out victory over CCAC Boyce Saturday afternoon in the first game of a doubleheader.

John Cherup picked up his first win of the season, going seven innings, allowing no runs on one hit. He struck out eight and hit one batter.

The big hit was a Nate White two-run triple in the seventh inning to put Fayette up 2-0. The other run was unearned.

Eric Ferry had the other triple for Penn State Fayette and Bobby Fulton and Bret King chipped in with doubles.

The Fayette bats came alive for the Roaring Lions to complete the sweep.

The Lions pounded out 13 runs and 16 hits.

John Zites (1-0) picked up the win for Fayette.

Zack Durbin had a double; three singles and four RBIs to lead the Roaring Lions, and Mike Newhouse had three hits and three RBIs.

Boys cross country

Laurel Highlands boys cross country team placed 11th out of 17 teams in the annual Gateway Invitational.

Anthony Cecchini was the Mustangs top runner, finishing in 26th place at 19:33.

Phillip Cooper followed Cecchini with a 62nd place finish in 21:19.

Tyler Geshay (66th, 21:29), Zack Eperjesi (71st, 21:45), Chris Felix (80th, 22:55), Randy Kitis (84th 23:16) and Phil Boger (88th, 23:37) rounded out the scoring for the Mustangs.

Girls cross country

Laurel Highlands girls cross country team place 11th out of 17 teams in the annual Gateway Invitational.

Jordy Hartsek was eighth overall for the Fillies with a time of 22:32 and teammate Brandi Liptock was 54th with a time of 26:25.

Meredith Ulmer (66th,27:12), Lauren Shull (67th,27:13) and Abby Siebart (73rd , 28:24) and Kali Fronczek (76th , 29:27) rounded out the scoring for the Fillies.

Women’s cross country

Laurel Highlands graduate Cassie Wallace finished 17th overall in the Duquesne Duals Saturday afternoon with a time of 19:58.
