Lady Raiders squeak past Kiski Area in section finale
Uniontown picked up a tough 2-point win, and the Lady Raiders solidified their playoff position with a 31-29 Section 1-AAAA basketball win Thursday night at Kiski Area. Cherese Hodge and Lawren Davis paced the Lady Red Raiders with nine and eight points, apiece.
Kiski Area jumped out to a 7-6 advantage at the end of one quarter of play, and won the second quarter, 11-8, to lead 18-14 at halftime. Uniontown won the third quarter, 10-7, to trail 25-24 going into the fourth quarter, which it won, 7-4.
The victory leaves the Lady Red Raiders with a section record of 10-4 and overall mark of 13-9. The loss drops the Lady Cavaliers to 7-7 in the section and 11-12 overall.
Next up for Uniontown will be a non-section contest against rival Laurel Highlands on Saturday.
Franklin Regional 54, Laurel Highlands 32 – The Lady Panthers jumped out early to a 12-7 first-quarter lead, and defeated the Fillies in Section 3-AAA action at Franklin Regional.
Laurel Highlands was paced by Maressa Guynn’s 14 points on seven field goals.
The Fillies could not contain Kristin Iovino, who led all scorers with 26 points on 12 field goals and 2-of-6 from the line.
Up next for Laurel Highlands will at Uniontown on Saturday in the cross-town rivalry.
Geibel Catholic 73, California 43 – Geibel Catholic finished undefeated in Section 2-A play with a lopsided victory over California at Geibel on “Senior Night.”
Seniors Mia White and Sarah Erdely put in 29 and 28 points, respectively. White was 14-of-19 from the floor, while Erdely was 12-of-21. White had five assists and six steals to lead the Lady Gators. Fellow senior Nicole Ardabell put in four points and pulled down five rebounds.
Breanne Dowden had four blocks for the Lady Gators.
Morgan Moluski had six field goals and 16 points for California. She also nailed four shots from behind the arc.
Geibel won the first quarter 19-18, but exploded in the second quarter to outscore California 29-1. The Lady Gators won the third quarter 10-4, but lost the fourth quarter 20-15.
Next up for Geibel will be at Southmoreland on Monday in a non-section affair. The loss leaves California with a section record of 4-6 and 8-14 overall.
McGuffey 60, Waynesburg Central 38 – McGuffey jumped out early and never looked back as it defeated Waynesburg in a Section 4-AAA contest at Waynesburg.
The Lady Raiders were paced by Abby Toothman with 12 points on four field goals and was 4-of-5 from the foul line.
Elisa Schober led McGuffey with 16 points.
The loss leaves Waynesburg with a section record of 0-10 and an overall record of 4-20.
Girls swimming
Laurel Highlands 112, Canon-McMillan 73 – The Fillies won nine of the 12 events to defeat Canon-McMillan in Section 5-AAA action at Laurel Highlands.
The Fillies’ Angela Nepa won the 50 (:25.88) and the 100 freestyle (:55.43) in WPIAL qualifying times.
She also teamed with Casey Dascenzo, Kendall George, and Karen Crakovich to win the 200 medley relay in 2:03.82, and with Kelly Huston, Alyssa Welch, and Dascenzo to win the 200 freestyle relay (1:48.68). Huston also picked up a victory in the 500 freestyle (5:58.12).
The win leaves Laurel Highlands with a record of 4-0 in the section and 13-2 overall. Canon-McMillan’s loss leaves it with a section record of 2-2.
Next up for the Fillies is Uniontown on the road next Thursday in a battle for the section title.
Geibel Catholic’s Kelsey Zimcosky swam the 100 butterfly (1:03.82) and 100 backstroke (1:05.08) in WPIAL qualifying times.
Uniontown 81, McKeesport 46 – The Lady Raiders won all 11 events to rout the Lady Tigers in Section 5-AAA swimming action.
Katie Patek picked up individual victories in the 50 freestyle (:26.33) and 100 freestyle (:58.60).
The Lady Red Raiders also won all three relay events contested.
Holly Nedley picked up victories in the 500 freestyle (5:33.32) and 200 IM (2:24.44). Rebecca Smith won the 100 butterfly (1:05.76) and the 100 backstroke (1:06.38) for the Lady Red Raiders.
Up next for Uniontown will be next Thursday as it hosts Laurel Highlands in the cross-town rivalry with the section title on the line.
Belle Vernon 93, Brentwood 63 – The Lady Leopards won two of three relays and took seven individual first places for a Section 5-AA victory.
Ashley Bronakowski (200 freestyle, 500 freestyle), Sydney Rusak (200 IM, 100 backstroke), Mary Wardle (50 freestyle, 100 freestyle), and Megan Russell (100 breaststroke) all finished first.
The 200 medley relay team of Melinda Siber, Russell, Melanie Omasta, and Emalee Tunney was victorious, as was the 200 freestyle team of Russell, Rusak, Tunney and Wardle.
Boys swimming
Canon-McMillan 103, Laurel Highlands 73 – Canon-McMillan won all three relays in route to a Section 5-AAA victory over the Mustangs at the Laurel Highlands’ natatorium.
Canon-McMillan’s Eric Forrester hit one WPIAL qualifier in the 100 butterfly (:55.68).
Laurel Highland’s had two swimmers with WPIAL qualifiers, Joey Saylor’s diving score of 179.85 points and Kevin Bane in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.14).
Zack Collins picked up a victory in the 200 freestyle (2:00.14) for the Mustangs.
The loss gives Laurel Highlands a section record of 2-2 and 6-9 overall, while Canon-McMillan improves to 4-0 in the section.
Uniontown 84, McKeesport 51 – The Red Raidres won seven of the 11 events to defeat McKeesport in Section 5-AAA swimming action.
The Red Raiders swept all three relays in route to its third section win in four tries.
Keanu Glisan won the 50 freestyle in a time of 24.09 seconds while teammate Dylan Gearing picked up a victory in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:08.16. Brodie Kelley gave the Red Raiders a victory in the 100 freestyle with a time of 54.37 seconds.
Next up for the Red Raiders will be next Thursday at they host Laurel Highlands in the swimming version of the cross-town rivalry.
Belle Vernon 89, Brentwood 81 – The Leopards slipped past visiting Brentwood for a Section 5-AA victory.
Brendan Lacey (200 freestyle, 500 freestyle), Zachary Wardle (200 IM), Aaron Mikula (100 butterfly), and Andre Maldonado (100 backstroke) all won individual events. The 200 freestyle relay squad of Maldonado, Jay Lewis, Lacey and Wardle won, and the 400 freestyle relay team of Wardle, Chris McConnell, Maldonado and Lacey was victorious.
High school wrestling
Charleroi 43, Uniontown 36 – The Cougars won eight of the 14 matches to defeat Uniontown in non-section action at the home of the Red Raiders.
Jerry Wilson (145) won by fall in 1:07 for Uniontown.
Derek Brangard (135) picked up a fall for the home team in over Chad Snyder in 46 seconds. Ken Seliga (103), Brittney Kulenovic (112), Tyler Holt (152), and Levi Merschat (160) picked up forfeit victories for Uniontown.
Charleroi’s Ethan Radomile (285) picked up a fall in 16 seconds for Charleroi in the opening bout.
The loss leaves Uniontown with a overall record of 2-15 as it will look forward to the Section 2-AAA individual tournament on Saturday, Feb. 16 at Hempfield.
