Speelman leads Roaring Lions to 80-68 victory

By the Herald-Standard Michael Speelman poured in a game-high 24 points, including a 4-of-6 performance from the foul line, as Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus downed Penn State-Scranton, 80-68, Saturday in men’s college basketball action.

Teammates Greg Johnson and Ray Nickens were next in the scoring column with 13 apiece, while Cedric Williams rounded out the double-digit scoring with 10.

Nickens recorded his first triple-double of the season, adding 16 rebounds and 11 assists.

Adam Joyce lit up the scoreboard for Penn State-Scranton with a game-high 30 points. Calvin Pacholec added 16.

Penn State-DuBois is next up on the Roaring Lion schedule. Penn State Fayette is now 4-7 in PSUAC and 4-15 overall.

Women’s basketball

Clarion 72, California (Pa.) 71 – Crystal Andrews paced California with 19 points and four steals, but the Vulcans let a 12-point lead slip away in a loss to the visiting Eagles.

It was the third-straight loss for the Vulcans.

Janelle Zabrensky recorded a double-double for Clarion with 18 points and 15 rebounds.

California held a 12-point advantage with 7:08 remaining, but 3-pointers by Clarion’s Ashley Grimm and My’Kea Cohill cut into the lead.

Westminster 49, Waynesburg 26 – The Titans snapped its season-high six-game losing streak with a win over the Yellow Jackets.

Senior Emilee Ackerman led the Titans with a game-high 23 points and 10 rebounds, for her 13th 20-point game and 11th double-double this season.

Elisha Jones, Michaelene Jones and Celina Gomez led Waynesburg with six points apiece. The Yellow Jackets shot just 27 percent from the floor.

Men’s basketball

Waynesburg 83, Westminster 77 – Tim Drakeley netted a game-high 29 points, including 6-of-10 from 3-point land, as the Yellow Jackets downed visiting Titans.

Westminster’s Craig Hannon became the Titans’ all-time leading scorer with 18 points, giving him 1,633 for his career. Mike Douds held the old record of 1,629 points from 1987-91.

The Titans led by as many as eight, before Waynesburg came back to take a 33-30 halftime lead.

Waynesburg went up by eight points early in the second half, but Westminster came back and tied the game 48-48 with 11:47 remaining. The Yellow Jackets led the rest of the game, including as many as 11 points down the stretch.
